Weekend Preview (March 23rd)Submit Comment
This weekend there is something for everyone in theaters.

First up is the horror sequel "The Hill Have Eyes 2," this time about a group of National Guard trainees, who find themselves battling against a vicious group of mutants. The material shown in the film may be gory and violent, but unfortunately doesn't stand up to the first one.

Also in theaters is Mark Wahlberg's "Shooter," directed by Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) and co-stars Danny Glover in this government conspiracy. The film is being compared to Sylvester Stallone's "Rambo," and not in a good way, but in the fact that there are lots of pointless gun battles and suspense. Doesn't sound so bad.

Now that we have a horror film and a thriller, we also get a drama, starring Adam Sandler and Don Cheadle, called "Reign Over Me." In this film Cheadle helps his former college roommate (Sandler) come to grips with losing his family on September 11th. The film is being enjoyed by critics, commenting on the great performances by the two actors which makes up for the slow paced story.

Finally, there are three 'PG' movies out, with "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" standing out. Being a complete re-boot of the franchise, this film ended up missing many factors that made the old movies and cartoons so great. While there is tons of action and excitement, there is little wit or humor, which the turtles are known for. Kids will still love this movie, even though they never heard of the characters.

Competing against the turtles is also "The Last Mimzy," about two siblings who begin to develop special talents after they find a mysterious box of toys. Here is a movie that kids and parents could enjoy, but due to its overly simplistic story, parents might be a bit bored. Overall a great film.

Also in competition for your kid's money is "Pride," starring Terrence Howard. The film is your average underdog story, only this time it deals with the sport of swimming. It is a story of how a man (Howard) turned a group of troubled teens into Philadelphia's first African American swim team. The film has a few great things going for it, like the racist Tom Arnold, but is still a story we have seen many times before.

In limited release comes "First Snow," starring Guy Pearce, about a man desperately trying to alter his future, after a fortune teller makes a frightening prediction. Also in limited release is the true story of a man who bluffed his way into London's high society by pretending to be Stanley Kubrick. The film is entitled "Color Me Kubrick" and stars John Malkovich. If you don't feel like seeing this movie in theaters, it is also coming out on DVD on Tuesday (March 27th).
