"Captain America: The Winter Soldier" Remains Box Office ChampSubmit Comment
"Captain America: The Winter Soldier" was able to keep the top spot at the domestic box office for the second week in a row by grossing another $41 million to bring its worldwide total to $477 million. The film already earned back its $170 million budget and surpassed the global earnings of the first installment ($370 million).

"Rio 2" had to settle for second place with $39.3 million, which is the exact opening numbers of the first installment. The new animated film was expected to take the top spot with $45 million, but fell short. Thanks to foreign markets, however, it's worldwide total is already $164.2 million. "Rio 2" cost $103 million to make and has a RottenTomatoes fresh rating of 49%.

Taking third place was the horror film "Oculus," which cost under $5 million to make and has already earned $12 million in its first weekend. It has a 72% fresh rating.

The other new wide release was "Draft Day," starring Kevin Costner. The new film took fourth place with $9.8 million. It has a 63% fresh rating.

Meanwhile, Nicolas Cage's "Joe" film bombed. It was released in 48 theaters, earning only $105,881, which is $2,206 per theater. The new movie, however, has an impressive 83% fresh rating.

"Only Loves Left Alive" vampire film, starring Tom Hiddleston, Tilda Swinton and Mia Wasikowska, was released in four theaters, earning $87,989, which is a decent $21,997 per theater. It has an 87% fresh rating.

The other new limited release of the weekend was "The Railway Man," starring Colin Firth and Nicole Kidman. It was also released in only four theaters, earning $61,845, which is $15,461 per theater. The film has a 68% fresh rating.

Meh. There's no competition to Marvel at the moment, although I was expecting CA2 to make more money a lot faster.

Kevin Costner is STILL helming films? Who the hell pays to see this guy? He was never a good actor and has about as much range as Keanu Reeves. Christ. Get a career as a store mannequin at The Men's Wearhouse already.

You should see cap2. I think you'd enjoy, mink.

@mink
I think CA2 will make more money than Thor 2 and come close to Iron Man 3. It's doing really well and I think the lack of box office will make up over the weekends, going up to, on a positive expectation, $250 million in the US.

Captain America is without a doubt the best movie to come out of Phase 2 so far, Iron Man 3 was total trash and Thor 2 was better, but ultimately fell to having a weak villain. Cap 2 was strengthened from not having the Marvel curse of a weak underused villain, but having a huge entire conspiracy to fight against, really stacking the odds in the film's favor.

I only wish there was a scene where Falcon questioned why Cap doesn't call in the other Avengers, and then Cap reply with either "not enough time" or "can't risk Hydra picking up on it". That would sufficiently explain the need for it to be a Cap and Black Widow centric film. It'd also be nice to see what Hawkeye's been doing this entire time.

@BlackDynamite
I imagine Hawkeye's absence will be explained in Avengers 2 and by this point who is there? Assuming Iron Man 3 happened and Thor 2, Stark is out of the game for right now and Thor was on the other side of the world. Plus, as you noted, without SHIELD's resources he couldn't find all of them. He didn't have a team and they couldn't contact without getting spotted. It all adds up. I argue that both Iron Man 3 and Thor 2 were just fine, both improvements over their predecessors and with the Cinematic Universe you need to be able to switch your mindsets. Iron Man 3 is a tech film, Thor is mythological where the villain is suppose to be simplified, personified evil really. I think without the Mandarin controversy it is a great film.

Saw cap Merica 2 a week or so ago. Pretty good flick but had some flaws. Ive got no interest in Rio 2 or Draft Day. Oculus doesn't seem to interesting either

But Joe actually looks decent. I might go see that soon.

Cap2 was one of the best movies I have see in a long time. Marvel is killing it. It was really really good.
