Marvel Ready for Box Office Battle With "Batman vs Superman"

Marvel Ready for Box Office Battle With "Batman vs Superman"Submit Comment
Last year, Marvel announced that it will release one of its movies on May 6th, 2016. It's still not clear which film will actually be placed in that slot, but apparently Warner Bros doesn't care, because it recently moved "Batman vs Superman" to be released the same weekend.

At this point, everyone is waiting to see which company will move its film in order to avoid a head-to-head battle at the box office. While promoting "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," Marvel head Kevin Feige revealed that Marvel isn't budging.

"We're certainly keeping the date there and we'll announce what that movie is, I assume, in the next few months," he said.

We can only assume that Marvel is saving the release date for "Captain America 3," "Thor 2" or "Doctor Strange." The question is whether any of those films can go up against "Batman vs Superman"?

Question: Can any of those three Marvel films outperform "Batman vs Superman" at the box office?

"Thor 2"

It was out months ago Alex.

Anyways, it's a silly question as everybody knows how much "Batman vs Superman" is highly anticipated. Whether it is controversial or not.

Oooh...Marvel vs DC. So, who'll blink first?

As much of a Marvel fan as I am, the prospect of seeing Batman and Superman on the same screen is too "exciting" for blockbuster audiences. The only film Marvel has that could probably stand a chance was Avengers 2, or an Iron Man 4, if they decided to continue for some reason.

Did I wake-up in an alternate universe? That last Superman movie was about as "fun" as a f*cking day at the DMV. Okay, so, they're bringing in Mr. Charisma-less to play Batman. Big deal.

Any other incarnation of a 'Batman vs. Superman' movie sans the dreary Snyder/Nolan element might have me genuinely excited. As it stands, whatever mild curiosity I have for this sequel will likely be laid to rest with the first two trailers.

I'm not about to start prasing Marvels 'Phase' building franchise as the next best thing since sliced bread (most of their films thus far have been disposable) but I at least have a pretty good time with them at the movies; they can at least manage big, colorful, and likable.

I'll take Doctor Strange or a Black Widow spin-off over this sh*t without thinking twice.

Thor 2!?!?!?! HOLY sh*t FASTEST REBOOT EVER!!!!!!!

I'll say this. If The Avengers 3 were coming out the same weekend as The Justice League, I would bet that millions would probably do back-to-back theater views in the same day as the anticipation for both might be nuclear.

i can answer the article's question...sort of, all three marvel films combined obviously will put batman vs superman out of the water, with captain america 3 and thor 3 earning the most out of the trio...considering the fact that DC has no other titles being released...wish michael keaton were there for batman 3 back in the 90s...one can't help but wonder how it would've looked if everyone involved in the first two were back for one more

Marvel already ate Warner Bros. for breakfast
...WB is just too stupid to know it.

Even in a long shot, it it DID go earn more...what does that prove?

It's like winning a battle and already lost the war...

Banging a massive wad in RDJ's wallet and bringing Iron Man 4 - that'd have a fair chance of beating Supes vs Bats.

@sedibus
I love the honest trailers. They point out all the idiot flaws and moronic story choices in films. Hunger Games, Man of Steel, Dark Knight Rises, and so many others destroyed that even actual news sites are noting them. Let the truth set us free from dumb movies!

@mink
I assume DC is the f*cked victim? LOL

@Rambo: that's an interesting point, perhaps the most interesting comment within these comments.

Titling is going to matter. A lot.

If they title it as a derivative of Man of Steel, a lot of the anticipation is gone and more than few people are going to tune out because Man of Steel, liked or not, isn't a popular comic book movie hit.

If they title it The Justice League without a proper build-up, they forfeit most of the spectacular momentum Marvel used in their lead up to The Avengers.

But if they title it Batman vs Superman, as they were going to do way back in 2006, then they have a one-shot deal of making a solid come-back in the public's mind. And it is a one-shot.

If they f*ck up the Batman vs Superman aspect, which is the core of this entire film. they're dead.

If they turn it into a JLA movie and f*ck up the ensemble character casting by relegating Batman to grumbling in the background while Olive Oyl prattles about her bulimia, it's over.

This movie is truly DC's all or nothing. They had either plan to win, and win really big, or they're going back with the home edition.

+a.

@Tanman: there's almost always one error or more in every WP article. The trick is finding them. I think it's done on purpose, too, and offered as a verbal form of Where's Waldo.
minkowski writes:

@Sleuth: It ain't Marvel. They're a juggernaut. And as much as I loathe comic book movies, I'm compelled to admire how Marvel has come to pretty much own the summer tentpole season.
Sleuth1989 writes:

@mink
LOL Yeah pretty much every other studio is struggling to keep up but yeah they own the market pretty much now. DC is trying to keep up with Justice League but their movies make Marvel's look like Masterpieces. I mean Marvel films are solid entertainment features but they also can have some great ones that have messages whereas DC...well not so much. LOL I keep hearing Captain America 2 is getting early praise. I'm hoping it lives up to the hype. I would kill for CA to take over as the best of the Marvel film series to show old school always kicks more ass.

I really wish we could edit our posts, but that's not possible thanks to the fact comments here are nothing more than a Javascript function that adds a new DIV element (your comment) to the existing page.
