"300: Rise of an Empire" and "The Grand Budapest Hotel" Score Big Wins at Box OfficeSubmit Comment
Seven years ago, Zack Snyder's "300" surprised everyone by grossing a record-breaking $71 million at the domestic box office. The sequel is now in theaters. It wasn't directed by Snyder, lacked major stars and cost almost double, but it still did well enough to rival its predecessor.

"300: Rise of an Empire" cost $110 million to make and grossed $45 million domestically, slightly more than expected. Overseas, it took in another $87.8 million for a worldwide debut of $132.9 million.

On RottenTomatoes, it has a 43% fresh rating. Only time will tell whether it will be able to bring in at least $456 million, which is the global take of the original film.

Taking second place was 20th Century Fox's animated "Mr. Peabody and Sherman," which cost $145 million to make and grossed $32.5 million. Internationally, it grossed another $66 million for a worldwide take of $98.5 million. It has a 77% fresh rating.

Meanwhile, Wes Anderson's "The Grand Budapest Hotel" made history by scoring the top location average of all time for a live-action film. The new movie opened in four theaters in New York and Los Angeles, earning $800,000 for a per-theater average of $200,000, besting "The Master," which previously held the record with $147,262 per theater. Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom" previously broke records by bringing in $130,749 per theater.

"The Grand Budapest Hotel," which has an 89% fresh rating, also set records in the UK, Germany, Austria and Belgium. Internationally, it grossed another $10 million. It's expected to get a wider release next weekend.

I just got back from seeing Eva Green's tits. They're great, the movie not so much. It got boring in the middle between battles.

^^The middle of the second act didn't have any action?

How does a CGI film of a little kid and his talking dog cost almost as much to make as Terminator 2, after adjusting for inflation?

Wasn't the whole point of cinematic CGI to make effects easier and cheaper?

This just in: 300 sequel does well at box office, viewing public still composed of idiots and progress towards 6th epoch pushed back two decades. That is all.

I see someone's been reading Ray Kurzweil's garbage again.
Stapes writes:

Also: I personally think wes anderson films are overrated drivel for faggots.
Stapes writes:

Only garbage because you didn't write it, right mink?
minkowski writes:
on March 9th, 2014 at 10:06:41 PM

Nope. Garbage because Ray is full of sh*t. Case in point: the high-functioning idiot thinks robots will achieve human-level intelligence by 2029. Wrong.

Plus this one

http://science.slashdot.org/story/10/08/17/1536233/ray-kurzweil-does-not-understand-the-brain

Ray is just a New Age flimflam artist selling technobabbled technological claims as spiritual feel-good claptrap, and the people who buy into his absurdities are ignorant, naive morons who have no clue what is happening in the fields required to bring about Ray's so-called "singularity".

"The singularity is to nerds what the rapture is to fundamentalist protestant wackjobs...."

lol.

Mink's just following his nature. Nihilistic narsisstic sh*thead.

Right, mink, as if I would bother doing any research into a link posted by a sociopathic, dime a dozen, idiotic troll. Yes, that will definitely give me a new perspective on the singularity concept. Note sarcasm.

SPOILER If you liked 300 you'll most likely like Rise of an Empire. I liked it although it's pretty much the same formula as 300. Outnumbered force win battles using superior strategy. A father son duo is in there just like the first. The father dies instead of the son though. It's not an amazing movie by any means but if anything lets hope its success compels Frank Miller to write a third Comic, ehem, "Graphic Novel"

@ minkowski 'Wasn't the whole point of cinematic CGI to make effects easier and cheaper?'...i'd like to give my own little answer to that...it wasn't intended that way at first...it was a fad that came out in the 80s like other effects to add realism to a movie, but as time went on, they attempted using it to save money...now they're losing money with it seems, i mean you don't see many animated films like lego with a 97 percent rating

minkowski writes:
on March 10th, 2014 at 4:09:30 PM

^^Agreed. We maybe seeing the moment though when CGI films have to take on huge costs and low ROI compared to live-action films, right before them moment when CGI becomes more cost-effective than live-action.
synthetic1985 writes:

hmm, by today's standards, the effects for the first toy story would be very cheap i'd imagine...like always though, need a lot of people if you are to do a big production...otherwise do something smart that's priceless and worth more than the so called 'effort' they put into remakes left and right
