Oscar Voters Admit Voting for "12 Years a Slave" Without Watching It

Posted: March 9th, 2014 by WorstPreviews.com Staff
Oscar Voters Admit Voting for "12 Years a Slave" Without Watching ItSubmit Comment
During the Academy Awards, host Ellen DeGeneres joked that there are two ways the evening will go. "Possibility number one: '12 Years a Slave' wins Best Picture. Possibility number two: You're all racists," she said.

The joke got big laughs, but now it seems that there's some truth to it, because several Oscar voters admitted that they voted for the film to win Best Picture despite never actually seeing it.

LA Times spoke to two Oscar voters, who revealed the reason they did this is because they felt obligated to do so due to the film's social relevance, but also felt that watching the movie would be too upsetting.

Some of this was coming out even before the Oscars aired. "12 Years a Slave" publicist Peggy Siegal told Vanity Fair that she's been speaking to voters who were reluctant to watch the film because of its content and subject matter. One woman said that she didn't want "more terrible stuff to keep in my head." Another one said: "I have never liked movies that have severe violence."

Yet, they all voted for "12 Years a Slave."

It's important to point out that this doesn't mean that "12 Years a Slave" didn't deserve the award. There are over 6,000 members in the Academy and it's not clear how many of those members voted for the movie without watching it or how close other nominees came to winning.

I am definitely NOT surprised. It is not that good a film, but it had to win otherwise it would seem that the Academy was 'racist'. This is Just another fairy-tale with a Hollywood twist. Entertainment for suckers lacking sense.

Oscar voters admit that they are all old irrelevant zombies who jack off to box office results.

Prisoners was the best film of 2013 and should have won best picture. 12YAS was overwrought trash. Even the director and writer hate each other and they are both black!

Nope, Wolf of Wall Street was an absolute masterpiece and best pic of the year.

White guilt is a myth created by the media. The academy voters were just lazy pussies to not watch what is a very overrated movie.

didn't want "more terrible stuff to keep in my head."

but they had no problem watching Shakespeare In Love

It's a shame that The Wolf of Wall Street didn't win any Oscars.. DiCaprio def deserved the oscar for Best Actor.

Just another day in the world of Tinseltown's liberal white guilt, and I am so glad I neither live there nor work with those crazy people.

No wonder Amy Brenneman hardly gets work.

"White guilt is a myth created by the media."

Uh, no it's a very real thing, and if you had seen the photo I posted of two young white women in Memphis, Tennessee, kneeling before an old black guy, begging for his forgiveness, you'd know white guilt is a major, major player in American socio-political circles, especially on the left.

It's very, very real, bud. Not a myth at all.

@Killer

I agree. Wolf of Wall Street should have won IMO. But I'm sure it's always like this. Each year there will always be voters voting for movies they didn't watch cause it's the favorite.

There's two kinds of racists in this world: first, there's the kind that genuinely believe that a particular group of people is fundamentally inferior or superior to another group of people. You know, the Ku Klux Klan, Nazis, Democrats, and what have you.

Then there's the kind that doesn't harbor such prejudices, however, they feel that they need to demonstrate some calculated and very public act of goodwill in order to PROVE to some hypersensitive clod(s) that they are not racist, something that should already be self-evident to anyone witj a nervous system. And the impetus for their decision is usually some pusillanimous, race-bating, ingrate sack of sh*t casting their character in a dubious light because either (1) he can't get ahead in life on his own, (2) self-righteously assumes the burden of defense for the quote-unquote downtrodden, or (3) micropenis/menstruation has got him/her down. Maybe all three.

The irony of the latter's plight is that if you have to PROVE to somebody that you're not a racist, then chances are you're probably a f*cking racist. Unless, of course, you are truly not a racist but feel some baseless sense of obligation to appease people who have been historically subjugated or are from lower socioeconomic backgrounds out of the fear (and very real threat in many cases) that not doing so will result in your public image being smeared. Dispensing reparations at gunpoint, if you will.

The Oscar voters in question fall into the second category. Instead of labeling these people racists, though, how's about we take the high road? You know, start an initiative that doesn't obfuscate the topic of race relations anymore than it already is? Let's call these people what they really are: PUSSIES. Big, fat pussies.

Was that really so hard? Alright, back to the shadows I go.

There should be some kind of verification system for the members of the academy to prove they actually watched a movie, or they shouldn't be allowed to vote!

I was suspicious the Hollywood knee-jerk morons would throw the award away for this manipulative and, frankly, dubious white guilt piece.
And they did just that, it appears!

Shameful.
