"RoboCop" Underperforms at Box Office, "The Lego Movie" Still Dominating

"RoboCop" Underperforms at Box Office, "The Lego Movie" Still DominatingSubmit Comment
Despite four new wide releases this weekend, "The Lego Movie" once again remained at the top spot at the domestic box office, adding another $49 million to its $180 million global total. The animated film cost only $60 million to make and still has a 96% fresh rating on RottenTomatoes.

"The Lego Movie" is expected to gross over $60 million over the four-day weekend, marking the second-best release during the Valentine's Day and Presidents Day holiday. "Valentine's Day" still holds the record at $63.1 million. "The Lego Movie," however, was able to accomplish this in its second week.

Out of the four new wide releases, "About Last Night" performed the best, grossing $27 million. The new movie, which stars Kevin Hart, Michael Ealy and Regina Hall, took second place at the box office. It has a 76% fresh rating and cost only $12.5 million to make.

The "RoboCop" reboot, which has a price tag of $100 million, landed in third place with a disappointing $21.5 million. The good news is that the film is performing well overseas, where it took in another $70 million, for a worldwide debut of $91.5 million. The new movie has a 49% fresh rating.

Taking fifth place was "Endless Love," a remake of a 1980 film and starring Alex Pettyfer. It grossed $13.4 million and has a lousy fresh rating of 14%.

The last wide release of the weekend was "Winter's Tale," starring Colin Farrell. It is the directorial debut of writer Akiva Goldsman (I Am Legend, A Beautiful Mind), but is a huge disappointment. The film, which cost $57 million, landed in seventh place with only $7.8 million. It has a 14% fresh rating.

Meanwhile, Disney's animated "Frozen" movie is quickly approaching the $1 billion mark. It has already grossed $955 million globally, becoming the third highest-grossing animated film of all time.

Too bad Hollywood won't listen now since RoboCop bombed.

I wouldn't say it bombed. I dont think anyone saw the crazy amounts of cash the Lego movie is doing. A hit? Sure, but not to this extent.

The fact that it is doing so well oberseas as well is a factor. Also it was V day. Releasing robocop then was borderline stupid. No wife/girlfriend was gonna want to see it this weekend which probably cut into tickets alot.

I think it will rebound a bit this week with another 20-30 mil weekend. If that happens and the overseas keeps the trend this will easily be a hit and spawn a sequel.

Maybe not a blockbuster, but the studio will make enough profit to pull the trigger on a RC2. It wont have much competition anyway

Saw Robocop. It was okay. Better than expected. Not surprised that it came in 3rd.

i think robocop will take a lot more money now a lot of schools are off in the uk so that means more money for those film makers

C'mon. Nobody gives a sh*t about the UK.

Josť Padilha and anybody involved with this film should be ashamed of themselves

along with anybody who paid to see this crime against cinema

why waste money on a sub-par unnecessary POS remake of Robocop when you can watch this version for free!

I just don't really care on this matter. Box office numbers mean sh*t to me. They simply reflect that people were bored enough to go see a movie. What the hell?! A Kevin Hart movie got a 76%? Can anyone tell me if the movie was even good?

So basically a movie about plastic blocks beats a film revolving around a PG-13 robot.

And people say film isn't dead.
