Robert Zemeckis to Remake "Man on Wire" as 3D Thriller with Joseph Gordon-Levitt

Robert Zemeckis to Remake "Man on Wire" as 3D Thriller with Joseph Gordon-LevittSubmit Comment
Sony Pictures is in the process of acquiring the rights to "To Reach the Clouds," the story of French high-wire artist Philippe Petit's walk between the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center on August 7th, 1974. The dangerous walk, called the "artistic crime of the century," was explored in the award-winning "Man on Wire" documentary.

The idea is to make a 3D movie similar to what was Alfonso Cuaron accomplished with "Gravity" or Ang Lee with "Life of Pi." Even though the film is still in early development, Robert Zemeckis (Flight, Cast Away, Back to the Future) is already on board to direct and Joseph Gordon-Levitt is in talks to play the lead role.

Much of the movie will be about how Petit managed with a small group of relatives and his girlfriend to carefully plan the walk, sneaking up to the top of the Towers at night. They hid until late evening when they strung a 450-pound cable from one building to the other. Petit then stepped off the South Tower for a 45-minute walk to the North Tower. The majority of the film plays like "Ocean's Eleven," while the third act will be all about using the latest technology to re-creating the actual walk.

The first film or video that will come to everyone's mind when they think of the Twin Towers....will obviously be the scene from Spider-Man (deleted) where he captures a helicopter in a giant web.

Iím still not entirely convinced that it wasnít Robert '2nd-Rate-Spielberg' Zemeckis who directed Gravity to begin with, as it plays just like one of his endeavors, both visually and dramatically.

So, Iím not surprised heís making this. Could be pretty good, as long as he steers clear of any dead-eyed mo-cap nonsense.

How about instead of this snoozefest you make back to the future part 4!!! Fox is unretired to full time acting so your biggest excuse is gone!

You could easily incorporate his disease as being a rare side effect of all the time displacements he has been through.

It could be modern day and be start with everything how it is currently and marty and doc confused why it looks nothing like 2015 from part 2. They then spend the rest of the movie traveling through time trying to uncover the reasons and correcting them.

It could end with them restoring the present to its correct universe state from part 2. We can accept that it has a self contained universe and that in the bttf universe 2015 is more advanced.

Or if you dont want to go that route, they could just play it off as a joke and only momentarily mention in passing that things did not turn out the same as they had previously seen.

Doc could just quickly explain with some science babble about how all the traveling they have done combined with the infinite variables in the universe ended up causing the timeline of technological advancement to change and that now what we knew of 2015 from part 2 will not come to pass until 2050.

Im sure they could also think of a few other story lines that I havent thought of that could make sense. If they can bring back rocky, terminator, jurrasic park and so many others why not bttf??

Bob gale obviously has interest, since he has been contributing to the advancement and rejuvination of the franchise in recent years. He wrote the story for the back to the future pc game that took place after the trilogy. He also oversaw the restoration of the HERO car from the films for universal that was just completed not long ago.

Christopher lyoid also participated in voice over for his character for said game as well as been game for reprising doc in various commercials over the years(direct tv), corporate videos(microsoft keynote) and starring in the ride at universal studios.

Im willing to bet if they were to figure out a good story and a way to make it work schedule wise for fox he would do it. And the rest of the cast as well.

The most difficult person to convince woulf be zemekis. But enough money might do it. Or maybe buy out his right of refusal on the franchise that him and gale have.

I dont know if it should or would be a new trilogy. Just saying I think a 4th has potential to be really good.

Zzzzzzz. They'll make movies on any old thing, these days, apparently.

I'd like to see them walk across the wire without the long pole. I'd like to see them cheat without the aid of physics.

Pointless.
The doc was the only needed film. We don't need some bs live action version.

Bob Z. has been working on this since LONG before the doc*mentary ever saw the light of day. And just because a doc has been made on the subject doesn't mean that a scripted feature isn't worthwhile. Personally I'm glad this project is seeing some daylight, not only because I (hopefully) will get to work on it, but because Zemeckis is a solid director who can give a fresh take on the story.

And vincere, Zemeckis will likely never, ever, EVER do BTTF4. Ever. Perhaps Universal has some leverage to farm it out to someone else- I believe Spielberg has a good deal of control over the property rights. But Zemeckis won't be involved. No amount of money will lure him, he's a f*cking billionaire and doesn't give two sh*ts about what any studio wants.

I might add that the typical "who needs this, the doc*mentary has already been made" argument holds little water with the moviegoing public. Even after winning an Oscar, how many people have actually seen that doc? 12? Don't get me wrong, I really like the doc, but if you set aside all the film nerds who watch sh*t like that, you're basically left with NOBODY having seen Man on Wire.

@Avirex, whenever I see a film with the twin towers I think about Path to Paradise(1997). About the 1993 WTC bombing in the end they catch the 'bad guy' and are flying him out of New York in a helicopter, as they pass the WTC buildings he looks over and says, "Next time, we will bring them both down!"
