Concept Art: JJ Abrams' "Superman: Flyby" Film That Never Happened

Concept Art: JJ AbramsSubmit Comment
Back in 2004, JJ Abrams wrote a script for a new Superman movie, called "Superman: Flyby," that was set to be directed by McG (Terminator Salvation) and star Henry Cavill (Man of Steel) as Superman and Robert Downey Jr as Lex Luthor. The movie never happened, mostly because the studio wanted to shoot in Australia and McG has a fear of flying. Bryan Singer stepped in and turned it into "Superman Returns."

But now, Jim Martin, who worked as a concept artist on such films as "Spider-Man," "Matrix Reloaded" and "Captain America: The First Avengers," has now posted concept art for "Superman: Flyby," giving us a look at some of the more important scenes of the movie. Check everything out below.

"Superman: Flyby" plot: An origin story that included Krypton besieged by a civil war between Jor-El and his corrupt brother, Kata-Zor. Before Kata-Zor sentences Jor-El to prison, Kal-El is launched to Earth to fulfill a prophecy. Adopted by Jonathan and Martha Kent, he forms a romance with Lois Lane in the Daily Planet. However, Lois is more concerned with exposing Lex Luthor, described as a government agent obsessed with UFO phenomena.

Clark reveals himself to the world as Superman, bringing Kata-Zor's son, Ty-Zor, and three other Kryptonians to Earth. Superman is defeated and killed, and visits Jor-El (who committed suicide on Krypton while in prison) in Kryptonian heaven. Resurrected, he returns to Earth and defeats the four Kryptonians, while the script ends with Superman off to Krypton, leaving a cliffhanger for a sequel.

is this some kind of plot from an alternate Superman universe?

who is authorizing all these absurd origin story remixes?

DC is just stuck on stupid while Marvel cruises by

@PhoenixFire

Henry Cavill did a screen test back in 04 for Superman.

WOW! Now that is what I call a steaming pile of sh*t of a story. So things really could have been alot worse, man of steel is looking alot better to me now.

Id say this never happened because someone somewhere finally stood up and yelled ARE YOU ALL f*ckING CRAZY!!??

This is right up there with that failed burton movie. Both god awful ideas that I thank god were aborted before birth. I think its entirely possible if either if those movies had gotten made that it would have nuked the superman universe on film for at least a decade if not more. Laying radioactive waste to the universe making it impossible to sustain a movie series

Of*

But yeah that story idea sounds f*cking awful. Superman Returns at least made sense even though it was really dull.

@Deaft0ne
It sounds like Singer actually continued off of this idea to make Superman Returns because the story starts out with Superman gone for 5 years after going to Krypton. I guess he felt it wouldn't make a good story and I agree.

@everyone
Being that I actually liked Superman Returns, you can imagine my disdain with the idea of this film that relied to heavily on science fiction and metaphysical concepts. And you're talking to a religious man. But come on "Kryptonian heaven". Why not just a heaven since Superman is run parallel next to Jesus. In fact I would have loved to have seen a scene where maybe Superman doubts he can change the world since it continues to be chaotic and then he dies and meets BOTH of his fathers from his two homes. Jor-El and Jonathan Kent. They kind of did it like that in "Smallville" but I like it because people tend to root out the Clark Kent character in favor of an overly tough brute Superman. That was half of what made the original Superman film so great was the duality of the character and now the writers are too f*cking stupid to handle that so basically Clark is just a single character with a slightly different attitude in and out of the costume. There is a reason Cavill didn't make it...because he is a sh*t actor! Why is he Superman now? Because we don't have good young actors so now all we have to work with is sh*t actors!

Sounds godawfully awful.

The sad thing is there are fantastic, modern origin stories for Superman, but for some reason these morons keep trying to make something "fresh and original".

You're right, that is sad.
