"The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" Beats "Iron Man 3" to Become Highest-Grossing Film at Domestic Box Office

"The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" Beats "Iron Man 3" to Become Highest-Grossing Film at Domestic Box OfficeSubmit Comment
Lionsgate just announced that "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" has now surpassed $409 million domestically, topping "Iron Man 3" as the highest-grossing 2013 release at the domestic box office. "Iron Man 3," however, is still ahead worldwide with $1.215 billion.

"The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" set plenty of financial records, but one stands out. It turns out that the movie is the first to be the highest-grossing and have a solo female lead since "The Exorcist," back in 1973.

Other records include becoming the biggest November opening of all tim and the biggest Thanksgiving box office total ever. The movie is now the 13th highest-grossing release in North America and only the fifth fastest film to reach the $400 million mark domestically.

The next installment in the franchise, called "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part I," will be released on November 21st. It will then be followed by "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part II" on November 20th, 2015.

Followed by the Hunger Games: "lets milk this bitch some more."

I'll just say my two cents and go. What's funny is that's considered impressive. With inflation, the film probably had half the audience of say Spider-Man back in 2002 when ticket prices were half of what they are now. This is what happens when you don't give a lot of good movies to audiences...they think this is the best they can get. It's not fair to compare since Hunger Games is technically finishing out in 2014. But what does this matter anyway? Most of the audience were arrogant little teenagers with zero personality!

Well, I guess screaming teenage girls are a much larger demographic than nerdy people.

@boogiel
Actually they are. LOL The ratio of girls to boys was like 3:1 pretty much in every school level I've been in through college.

Every time I think of mockingjay I think of a spliff with a face talking sh*t about why I didn't roll it fatter.

@mink
Since about 90% of the world consists of fools that explains why the world is so sh*tty in the economy. LOL
