"Wolf of Wall Street," "Secret Life of Walter Mitty," "47 Ronin," and "Grudge Match" Underperform at Box Office

"Wolf of Wall Street," "Secret Life of Walter Mitty," "47 Ronin," and "Grudge Match" Underperform at Box OfficeSubmit Comment
During this Christmas weekend, theaters got five new wide releases. Even though all of them underperformed, the results were strong enough to set a box office record with $10.9 billion earned in 2013. That beat the previous record of $10.8 billion set in 2012.

"The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" once again landed in first place with another $29.9 million, bringing its worldwide total to $614.1 million. The film is still far from $1.02 billion that "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" earned a year ago.

The first of new wide releases was "Wolf of Wall Street," re-teaming Leonardo DiCaprio with director Martin Scorsese. The three-hour movie landed in fifth place with only $18.5 million and a total of $34.3 million after a five-day debut. Since "Wolf of Wall Street" cost $100 million to make, it will heavily depend on foreign box office to break even. It has a 77% fresh rating on RottenTomatoes.

Ben Stiller's "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" ended up in seventh place with $13 million over the last three days and $25 million over the five-day break. The $90 million film will also have trouble making its money back. It has a 47% fresh rating.

Keanu Reeves' "47 Ronin" action film took the ninth spot with only $9.9 million. The movie cost $200 million to make and Universal Pictures already announced that it will lose at least $175 million. "47 Ronin" has an 11% fresh rating. "We never set out to make a film that we think won't work," said the studio. "When we gave it the greenlight years ago, we thought we had discovered a new franchise."

"Grudge Match," starring Robert De Niro and Sylvester Stallone, didn't even break into the top ten. The boxing movie landed in eleventh place with $7.3 million and $13.4 million after the first five days. Even though the budget is only $40 million, the film is on track to lose money. It has a 20% fresh rating. "Sometimes a film just doesn't resonate," said Warner Bros.

Justin Bieber's "Believe" concert documentary performed even worse, landing in 14th place with only $2 million, a fraction of the $30 million that Bieber's last film "Never Say Never" earned. It has a 56% fresh rating.

There goes your lesson, Hollywood. If you want to make profit during Christmas, just stick with kid's fantasy and fairytale stories.

Seeing Hobbit on New Years Day
SACdaddy writes:

Wolf of Wallstreet is f*cking insane!!!! Not exactly the family friendly film that's geared to the masses to make huge profits. But its definitely the most entertaining film of the year if you like drugs, orgies, and hot chicks. Word of mouth will help pump its profits all this New Years week. It's the perfect party film and maybe Leo's best performance since The Aviator.

saw hobbit last night seemed like they really should have made it into two films instead of 3. Its just padding a tiny book with poor writing to fill out the runtime all the scenes with tauriel the lost bitch evangeline whatever were terrible and pointless. We didnt need a love story between her and a dwarf that noone gives a sh*t about and have legolas jealous of it. The action scenes were made comical on purpose why? It looked pretty and had good large sets but it was completely souless. should have had it at one film two max

I'm just waiting for the blu ray releases. I'm not spending 20 plus for a movie that will be released in a couple of month's.

American Hustle was a decent film.

The big question i have here is how in the f*ck a concert movie, much less a Justin bieber concert movie, has a 56% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes
Deaft0ne writes:

I saw The Hobbit: TDOS and The Wolf of Wall St. over the weekend. The Hobbit was okay with Smaug being the only really memorable part.

TWOWS otoh was fantastic, one of the best films I have seen all year and Leo and Jonah Hill are great in it.

BLACKDYNAMITE
when i read that(bieber) i wondered the same sh*t
till i remembered what someone said to me here about the 'critics' that are on RottenTomatoes

shiit,i believe even MINK said Dustin has done the requirements to be able to cat spray his critique on RT

VHS2 better than 1??

i may have been burned before (Limitles/Man Of Steel)
but i still trust my judgement over some hack 'critics' who trade their integrity for gift bags and trips from movie studios

Piracy is killing the industry

have you seen this?

http://boxofficemojo.com/yearly/chart/?yr=2013&p=.htm

the number one film is a fanboy film
the number two movie is a girlie flic
then look at the rest

all these demographics have access to movies by pirated means

Dicaprio is for girls, girls dont care about Wall Street
Walter Mitty was under promoted (especially when compared to Ron Burgundy) and turds dont know sh*t about Walter Mitty

fanboys know The Hobbit films are filled with cgi fluff but are more than happy to pay the extra IMAX3D bucks
the same reason turds are gizzin themselves choosing special fx over substance/integrity<-theres that word again
(Man Of Steel)
