Keanu Reeves' "47 Ronin" Loses $175 Million for Universal Pictures

Universal Pictures has acknowledged that Keanu Reeves' "47 Ronin" will end up losing a lot of money for the studio, disclosing that it has already taken the first step to write off the $175 million price tag of the movie.

"47 Ronin" opened on Christmas Day and is expected to bring in under $20 million through Sunday, which will become the worst debut for a $150 million-plus movie in 2013. The film even had a disappointing showing in Japan where it was testing well.

"Universal Pictures regularly evaluates its film slate for potential adjustment," said the studio. "In the case of '47 Ronin,' we adjusted film costs in previous quarters and as a result our financial performance will not be negatively impacted this quarter by its theatrical performance."

Universal had a great year with "Despicable Me 2" and "Fast and Furious 6," so it definitely can take a loss.

Nice wording. Way to avoid taking accountability.

How do you figure, It's been out for what? Less then a week? It's has plenty of time to make SOME profit back. 175M is a lot to assume it'll lose. That'd be assuming it makes f*ck all from now on

I'm guessing the flop was in that the director wasn't able to juggle an entertaing cool-on-paper-plot, characters you really didn't care about, and unable to match with the whole thing with the awesome whiz-bang of the CGI...

I call it the "Sucker-Punch Syndrome"...

What were they thinking releasing a movie like this on Christmas?? When was the last time a samurai or a kung fu movie made big waves on American box office, Especially one released around Christmas? Did they really think people were gonna want to spend their Christmas watching this??

That is a shame cause the movie looks quite good.

Reckon it will make a lot in China.

what would you expect with film that was barley advertised and a trailer that lacked an attention grabber besides a dragon. But what else is new.
shafe41 writes:

What part of this is a surprise?
It's a star that nobody cares about in a movie that nobody cares in a genre that nobody cares about with a name that is ridiculous.

You could tell it was a bomb by the 100 million dollars worth of CGI and the fact Keanu was leading.

Good one, Universal.
