Eddie Murphy Explains Why "Coming to America" Never Got a Sequel

Eddie Murphy Explains Why "Coming to America" Never Got a SequelSubmit Comment
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the "Coming to America" comedy, starring Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall. Despite being a hit, we never got a sequel. And now, while visiting "The Arsenio Hall Show," Murphy explained by a follow-up never happened.

"When 'Coming to America' came out it was like a big... the bunch of lawsuits. There was some dude claiming he was a prince," he said. "I'd be out in the club and this African dude would roll up and say (Murphy does an impression) 'I'm the real Prince. You stole my life from me. And I want the money, I'll kill you.' I actually had depositions where I had to sit across the table from this dude [who's] going 'I'm the real King.' There were so many lawsuits, so we were like [forget it]."

Apparently the African man came to America from his country in the pursuit of the girl from the Michael Jackson's "Thriller" music video, and was upset to find out that a similar story was already playing in theaters.

Watch the video below to see Murphy tell the whole thing.

Arsenio Hall has always been funny with Murphy...Coming to America, Harlem Nights.

Like Murphy's comedy rabbit's foot...

The thing about Murphy is he became famous on making comedy of real people...the low class, the ones everyone could identify with because everyone had one in their family.

Look at his famous roles are based on real people...their attitude, their quirks, the real life, street smart/ con man observations...You saw it in Trading Places, Beverly Hills Cop...sh*t, even in Norbit. And even though the execution was excellence, but no one talks big of his material, above average but never touching Pryor/ Carlin, just his success.

Murphy's multiple character movies are his only funny movies, but even then nothing new...he just perfected his comedy idol Richard Pryor's role in Which Way is Up?.

But he is still funny when he wants to. That's why everyone wants another stand-up special from him, but what is he gonna talk about? "Rolexes, what are up with that?" "Don't you hate how the valet scratch your cars?" I think that's why Pryor was so tortured, he wanted to give a glimpse of real black America...but hated to be mainstream. Do you dance to the money? Or do you stay real to the fans?

Guess Murphy got out his dancing shoes...what Pryor, I think, tried to avoid and had trouble with. Murphy just now has his movie career and even that is suffering...he couldn't even have his BHC show on TV. And you know they will f*cking put just about any piece of crap on TV.

Murphy needs to come back to his roots and go back to polish his craft...like Seinfeld, like C. Rock. That's how Rock continues his comedy street cred. He reflects today's problems/ issues and puts it up to the audience in the comedy mirror. Seinfeld still doesn't care if he eats it...he already has the money. He just wants to perfect his craft.

Maybe the best part Murphy played is fast tracking discovering black comedy talent. It's still considered an honor to have him put a black comedian in his movies...it's basically him telling them, "You're funny, you got it." Who the f*ck doesn't want that for a black comic?

Anyway, mark this one as another rant...

Shrek and Bowfinger were Eddie's last bearable movies, it's been said and I'll say it again, I miss 80's Eddie, The sequel to Coming to America is watching it over and over.

hence the easy money crap roles

baby mommas arent cheap,either

i saw this two days ago
he's also putting together a mockumentary about him putting his stage show together and Stevie Wonder has already confirmed that he will kick Murphys ass in a fight scene

His brother, Charlie Murphy is way funnier than him now. He was great on Chappelle's show and his stand-up is awesome.
