Study Says Gun Violence in PG-13 Films is Worse Than in R-Rated Films

Study Says Gun Violence in PG-13 Films is Worse Than in R-Rated FilmsSubmit Comment
According to a new study by Ohio State University, gun violence in PG-13 movies has increased considerably in recent decades, to the point that it has exceeded gun violence in R-rated films.

The university examined gun violence in top-grossing movies, finding that the frequency of gun violence has tripled in PG-13 films since 1985, which is one year after the rating was introduced. In fact, since 2009, the frequency of gun violence in PG-13 movies has rivaled gun violence in R-rated movies, and in 2012 has actually surpassed it.

MPAA's definition of a PG-13 rated movie is that "there may be depictions of violence ... but generally not both realistic and extreme or persistent violence."

The study included a total of 945 films and focused on sequences involving the firing of hand-held guns with the intent to harm or kill a living being. It turns out that in 1985, PG-13 films had on average a one 5-minute segment with gun violence. That rate has tripled in recent movies.

The Grey is a load of nonsense

Silly movie.

Whaattt I loved the Grey, was a very well done movie. As for this: Stupid. One day people will stop blaming movies for their violent acts and studies like this won't have to be done

Well done, maybe, but none of what happened made any sense, especially the depiction of the wolves and their behavior. Yeah, maybe they were "mutant" wolves, but that makes The Grey much more like science fiction than what it was trying to be, which I assume is some kind of philosophical meditation on the meaning of life and death, or something.

Also, Liam's character is a moron. They leave the crash site, which is the only place they can ever hope to receive rescue, to run across a frozen, snow-swept plane, into trees, because Liam says they need to get away from the wolves, even though he admits they, the wolves, have an enormous territorial area. Not to mention they predictably run right into where one would expect the wolves to den, which is the trees and hills, and not the empty frozen plain where they crashed.

Then once they arrive at the forest, the wolves start picking them off Predator-style, which makes one wonder whether or not the film was originally meant as satire, or perhaps the wolves were originally written as extraterrestrial land-sharks.

Also, back at the crash site, that one guy just walks off from the camp fire to take a piss in the dark, fully knowing doing so puts him in the "running big-boobed chick" category for horror-film characters.

Plus, why the hell did they leave the shelter and supply of the plane crash area, not to mention the potential food resources (think "Alive") if the situation deteriorates considerably further, just to run off to the forest were there's next to nothing to eat? Who put Liam in charge and why did all the other geniuses take his lead?

Then the movie ends with Liam's head next to the alpha wolf's stomach, which is just f*cking stupid, like the damned creature has the emotional intellect to understand the significance of a man's head as a battle trophy.

The Grey goes into the idiotic scriptwriting pile with Prometheus, The Day the Earth Stood Still and Knowing.

Well that was a well thought out response. I can see where you're coming from on the majority of the things you've broughten up, But I feel it all goes down to the whole "It's not supposed to be realistic" concept in moviemaking.

It would be no fun at all if it was realistic. They'd crash, Freeze (Most likely to death) and the wolves would hardly bother them. Movie over. Boring.

This way that have situations which keeps the viewer entertained, Not to mention a pretty good narrative.
minkowski writes:

Tanman, they could have utilized another plot device instead of a bunch of humongous, semi-human supernatural super-wolves.

I mean, The Grey borders on horror in that it's almost a sequel to Cujo.

What would have been more interesting...a character and psychological study on the group dynamics of a bunch of very different men stranded in an extremely inhospitable locale with no means of escape and dwindling options for survival. Basically Lord of the Flies meets White Fang.

Instead we get a film that looks more like a canine sequel to Alien rather than a film on the existential meaning of how we live and die (not in L.A.)
