Disney Explains Why "Star Wars: Episode VII" is Delayed Until December 2015Submit Comment
Even though Disney has been planning to release "Star Wars: Episode VII" in theaters during the summer of 2015 ever since the original announcement, a few days ago Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed that the release has been pushed to December 18th, 2015.

Before the delay, there were rumors that "Star Wars: Episode VII" had script issues and Iger wanted to move forward despite the problems. Now, in a new interview, he explained the reason for the release shift.

"This is obviously one of the most important films that we are working on right now," he said. "And one of the things that was very important to us is that we give the creative team, JJ Abrams and his writing team, the time to design, write and produce the film so we can optimize quality, so they can create a great film."

He continued: "At one point we considered the summer of 2015, but it felt like, particularly with some changes we made in the writing team, that that was going to create a bit of a rush and I didn't think that was optimal for obvious reasons. So Christmas 2015 became the date."

Iger closed by saying that the December 18th release date is the exact date when "Avatar" was released. And "Avatar" became the highest-grossing film of all time. "Hopefully that brings good luck," he said.

That's one of the lamest and stupidest explanation I've ever heard.

@boogiel

Yeah, but for the most part they didn't copout with the lame excuse of wanting to avoid summer movie competition (Star Wars IS the competition) and, instead, just saying that they simply needed more time for a proper production.

Not that it matters.

It has nothing to do with all the toy merchandise that will be released in time for Christmas obviously!

^ exactly what I was thinking.

How about the simple statement "We have no script yet"? (Not that it stopped the prequels though)

By the way, is that what the new official Star Wars logo? Cuz it certainly looks like it's been...Abramsed.

In my mind he said: "We realised the script was quite sh*tty and the production team said they were already out of ideas on how to install more lens flares on the sets."

Didn't have anything to do with toys. Had something to do with hiring the guy who took three years to get Toy Story 3 right trying to make a decent script for the most anticipated film in a decade.

Toys? lol. Summer would have been better. People would have eaten up whatever was on the shelves, and then Disney would have had six months at least to prime the pump for the holiday season.

No, a December release actually hurts their toy sales because Star Wars merchandise is always a sure sell.

Actually, it makes sense for Disney to do this. Avengers 2 is scheduled to open May 1, 2015 and if they released Star Wars in the same time frame (Summer 2015), they would be cannibalizing their own sales as they own both properties now.
