"Thor: The Dark World" Smashes Box Office Competition with $86 Million

"Thor: The Dark World" Smashes Box Office Competition with $86 MillionSubmit Comment
Marvel's "Thor: The Dark World" easily took first place at the domestic box office this weekend by grossing $86 million, short of the $100 million the studio was hoping for.

Even though the take was less than expected, the sequel still had a better debut than the first movie, which opened to $65.7 million in May of 2011. "Thor: The Dark World" earned one of the top November openings of all time, but fell short of the $88.4 million that "Skyfall" took in on the same weekend a year ago.

The sequel grossed another $241 million internationally, where it began rolling out last weekend. It's already on its way to beating the first movie, which earned $268 million overseas in total.

The first "Thor" film ended up with a worldwide total of $450 million. The sequel, which has a 66% fresh rating on RottenTomatoes, will likely gross about $650 million, which means that a third installment is all but guaranteed to happen.

Meanwhile, "The Book Thief" was released in four theaters, earning $108,000, which is $27,000 per theater. The movie has a 59% fresh rating.

I'll watch the Thor sequel again during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. I also saw The Dallas Buyers Club this weekend.

Yawn...wake me up when Thor 2 has surpassed Iron Man 3.

title should have been "Thor Hammers Competition" because that's how cheesy this site is.

Screw what critics said! I thought "Thor: The Dark World" was actually an improvement over the first film! Eccleston was a great villain, the story was more interesting, and Asgard felt less like a giant cardboard cutout and more like a real place this time...well as fantasy worlds go. LOL Just everything was more interesting. And, while I don't like cliffhangers, the way they set up a Thor 3 was great. Makes me curious where they go next.

@Horror How was it? Been wanting to see Dallas Players club. I'll probably watch this in a week or so

I thought Thor 2 had WAY too much buildup for how lackluster that final fight was. The "twist" ending was nice, but far too predictable.

@Tanman: Dallas Buyers Club is going to net Matthew an Oscar nod if not an award for best leading male in a movie.

He played the role well and the story was well paced. Jared Leto got mostly laughs every time he was on screen even though I thought he played his role as a gay man toned way down instead of flaming.

I was bored through Thor as soon as they went to Earth, Thor 2 wasn't as boring but felt like an empty/lifeless/hollow film. The action scenes weren't too bad but it's just a lot of people hitting people through walls. For me London was the standout character looking sexy as ever!

I love how the title conflates Thor with smashing, because, you know, he has a hammer and stuff.

Lap it up, folks, because this is as clever as Alex gets.

Blah blah blah.....yeah ofcourse thor 2 is making a killing. Marvel movies are made to make money. They keep it stupid simple so they dont upset anyone and make sure its kid friendly. I will never let them make any money offf of me
