"Point Break" Reboot is a Huge Hit at American Film Market

"Point Break" Reboot is a Huge Hit at American Film MarketSubmit Comment
Lionsgate and Alcon Entertainment are currently at the American Film Market attempting to pre-sell the distribution rights to a reboot to Keanu Reeves' 1991 action-thriller "Point Break."

Despite not having a cast and considering that the film's director, Ericson Core (Invincible), has just one movie on his resume, the reboot has sold out worldwide. "Buyers were sold on the high concept of the film," said Lionsgate. "This is going to be a much larger scale film than the first one."

And that's exactly how Lionsgate is promoting the reboot. Because Warner Bros is on board to release the movie domestically, the claim is that it will be a wide release with a budget somewhere between $90 million and $110 million. The original movie cost only $25 million and grossed $83 million worldwide, so it's not clear why Lionsgate and all the buyers believe "Point Break" all of a sudden has this great potential, especially when the cast has yet to be attached.

The first "Point Break" was set in California. The new movie will go global, with filming planned in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, China and Malta. "This will be much more like a James Bond film," added Lionsgate.

German distribution Concorde agrees, having already paid several million dollars for the German rights to the picture. "It is probably the best high-concept film out there," said the company after hearing the entire sales pitch by Core, who reportedly blew buyers away with his presentation.

The story would revisit the original film's characters, Johnny Utah - an undercover FBI agent investigating a series of daring robberies -- and Bodhi -- the head robber and extreme athlete. The plan is to go beyond surfing and to include the massive world of extreme sports like snowboarding, rock climbing and motorcycle racing.

They already remade this movie in 2001. They called it The Fast and The Furious and swapped surfing for street racing. Check it out

How many times do they have to remake this movie, officially or unofficially?

Undercover cop gets involved in the extreme world of ____, ends up really liking the target guy and falling in love with the target's girl, has to make a tough moral choice between...blah blah blah, seen it.

The original was lightning in a bottle and is still the best film that Kathryn Bigelow has directed. This remake will bomb. I have no idea why distributors are j*zzing their pants over the idea of a remake, it makes no sense and sounds like an SNL sketch or something.

I meant j*zzing their pants over a remake that does not even exist yet.

How can the movie be so well loved and only gross 85 mill...should be more in DVD sales.

That info needs updating...

As for the remake. sh*teater and Stapes are right, the most current similar plots include are XXX & F and F...both headlined by Vin Diesel coincidently.

Its a shame that marketing is more important than originality and quality...

Okay, so the title will still be Point Break, which is a SURFER TERM, even though Switzerland and Austria are totally landlocked?

Brilliant.

Just rename the damned thing to Fast and the Furious XXX and wait for Wan to fill in the missing 23 films.

Idiots.
