Disney Announces "Star Wars: Episode VII" Release Date

Disney Announces "Star Wars: Episode VII" Release DateSubmit Comment
It looks like the summer of 2015 has just become less busy, because Disney just announced that "Star Wars: Episode VII" has been pushed back to December 18th, 2015.

The studio went on to seemingly confirm the rumor that producer Kathleen Kennedy wanted to delay the release until 2016 due to script problems. "We're very excited to share the official 2015 release date for 'Star Wars: Episode VII,'" said Disney. "Where it will not only anchor the popular holiday filmgoing season but also ensure our extraordinary filmmaking team has the time needed to deliver a sensational picture."

Filming is set to begin during the spring of 2014 at Pinewood Studios.

Meanwhile, JJ Abrams commented on the news that "Star Wars: Episode VII" writer Michael Arndt was recently replaced by Abrams himself and Lawrence Kasdan (The Empire Strikes Back). "[Michael is] a wonderful guy and was incredibly helpful in the process," said the director. "[But] it became clear that given the time frame and given the process and the way the thing was going that working with Larry in this way was going to get us where we need to be and when we needed to be."

Can't tell if that's better for the film or not. I'm guessing better, Less competition, not that it really matters

I really have no idea what is coming out in 2016, but it sounds like they are really desperate to get it out in 2015. ... Stupid timetable of theirs is waaaay ahead of schedule.

It's better for the film(a lot of the higher ups wanted a summer 2015 release) AND it will be better for the box office. Titanic and Avatar both opened on this weekend. This release does two things. 1. Allows a big film to run roughshod over all of the weak January released and 2. Allows the film to hit a high frequency of holidays, which boost theatrical attendance and help films have 'stronger legs'

Plus, Star Wars is one of the true "appeal to all ages" brands. No better time to release a film like this than the end of the year when families all come together for the holidays.

Here's my prediction: they'll push back the sometime between now and, no later than fall of 2015, they'll push back the release date YET AGAIN to May of 2016, so as to ensure the franchises traditional May/summer opening and because the extra half-year probably won't be long enough to safely and competently account for necessary reshoots and the ass-load of visual effects and 3D processing to be completed.

They'll jump from Christmas to the next logical time slot. Just my theory, anyways.

Eh, I goofed that first sentence. But you all get my meaning, anyhow.

Did the same thing with star trek 09. Release set for xmas time only to eventually be pushed back to may of 09. The draw of summer blockbuster potential was too much to say no.

I think it will be fully ready to release xmas 2015 but pushed to may 2016 to fall in line with every other live action star wars to date. Bank on it
