"The Purge 2" Gets Director and Start Date

"The Purge 2" Gets Director and Start DateSubmit Comment
Universal Pictures has announced that James DeMonaco will return and direct the sequel to "The Purge," the $3 million film that was released earlier this year and went on to become a surprise hit with earnings of $87 million worldwide.

"The Purge 2" is planning to shoot in California, where the film applied for its 25% tax credit. The application was approved back in June, but one of the requirements is that the sequel must begin shooting before the end of the year. Since the tax credits work out to about $2.25 million, it's clear that the sequel will have a budget closer to $10 million.

In the first movie, starring Ethan Hawke, a wealthy family is held hostage for harboring the target of a murderous syndicate during the Purge, a 12-hour period in which any and all crime is legalized.

Incredibly overrated. The concept was intriguing but the development was quite disappointing. Got bored towards the end of the flick.

They should have made a semi-accurate film based on the actual historical events

but that would have involved some imagination, thought and more than Ethan Hawke pretending he has theatrical pull.

The premise is just hard to buy. It's actually well-made for a low budget flick, and this director should get bigger work as a result. It's just hard to swallow a "ten years from now" storyline where America sanctions an annual night of guilt-free violence.
Ethan Hawke gives a decent performance, one of his best in recent memory. Lena Headey, though, looks lost. She's a good actress(she was great in DREDD), so I chalk this up to how her character was written. The script has a lot of stupid stuff in it, besides the premise. The son and daughter are poorly written. The only good part is when they finally enter the house, and Hawke starts taking people out. The ending is lackluster as well. It's watchable, but not recommended.

^^None of that matters because the first film made a whopping 90 mil on a paltry 3 mil budget, which for Universal is pocket change.

I mean, when your ROI is ~3000%, you're going to care enough to try your luck again.

I LOVED the idea of the first film and it was good but one thing kept taking me out of it. I dont give a f*ck how much teen angst, resentment, or whatever bullsh*t the family had going on, with that sh*t going down and lunatics trying to get into your house, NO ONE in their right mind would wonder the f*ck off, even once, let alone repeatedly. It was poor writing at its finest. Needed to create a reason for the typical horror movie seperation.

the coolest thing about the purge hands down is seeing the main bad guy himself at universal studios for the halloween horror nights...he nailed his character in person equally as he did in the film
