"Ender's Game" Takes First Place at Box Office, "Thor: The Dark World" Opens Huge Overseas

"Ender's Game" sci-fi film, starring Harrison Ford, Ben Kingsley and Asa Butterfield, took first place at the domestic box office this weekend by grossing $28 million. The movie, which has a 62% fresh rating on RottenTomatoes, cost $110 million to make, which means it will rely on international markets to become profitable. But since the "Ender's Game" book was never popular overseas, the film was only able to earn an additional $9.1 million.

"Last Vegas," starring Robert De Niro, Michael Douglas, Morgan Freeman and Kevin Kline, ended up in third place with $16.5 million, higher than expected. The $28 million film should have no problem making a profit. It has a fresh rating of 44%.

The other new wide release of the weekend was "Free Birds," voiced by Owen Wilson and Woody Harrelson. The animated movie settled for fourth place with earnings of $16.2 million, a disappointing result for a film that cost $55 million to make. It has a 21% fresh rating.

"Gravity" continues to perform well even in its fifth week. The movie has earned $427 million worldwide, beating "Taken 2" ($376.1 million) to become the highest-grossing live-action October film.

In limited release, Rachel McAdams' "About Time" time-traveling movie opened in 175 theaters and grossed $1.1 million. That's a decent $6,286 per theater. The film, which has a 65% fresh rating, will expand to a wide release next weekend.

The Princess Diana biopic, called "Diana" and starring Naomi Watts, was released in 38 theaters, earning just $64,900, which is $1,708 per theater. The reviews for the movie have been extremely negative, currently standing at 9% on RottenTomatoes.

"Thor: The Dark World" will be released in the US on November 8th, but it has already hit theaters overseas in 36 different countries where it earned a whopping $109.4 million. The movie has an 84% fresh rating.

Thor 2 is going to make some serious domestic money, though I am surprised Ender's Game is such a relatively big hit. Guess it's the Hunger Games in Space movie for which we've all been waiting.

How the f*ck does an animated movie about Birds cost $55 million to make.
A follow up question...how the f*ck do I get a slice of that money they're putting in a pile and Burning like the Joker did in TDK?

The tagline for Free Birds:

"The greatest turkey movie of all time"

Man, they weren't kidding.

Saw Ender's Game Friday. Not as complete as the book (to be expected) but, still, better and more faithful to the main themes to a surprising degree. Maybe a bit tedious up to a certain point, but the final 20 minutes or so really pay off, and not simply with FX spectacle.

In fact, the film's denouement is quite emotional and pretty ballsy, again, for not shying away from the book. It's one of those films that becomes increasingly more interesting all the way up to the closing shot, leaving you wanting more. For some reason, though, I doubt they'll follow up with a sequel.

Also, I'm crushing on Hailee Steinfeld. There, I said it. Call the pedo-police if it makes you feel better.

@Cannon
Glad to hear the movie isn't a failure. Even though I somewhat enjoyed the trailer, I was skeptical that the full-length feature would turn out well. Thanks for the confirmation that I may have been wrong. (Let's be honest though, I was going to watch it either way.)

Thor: The Dark World was excellent. Such a spectacle. And it's the funniest Marvel film to date, thanks to Loki and Erik Selvig. Not the strongest story but it's incredibly entertaining. Alan Taylor did a good job.
