"Star Wars: Episode VII" May Begin Filming Despite Major Script Problems

"Star Wars: Episode VII" May Begin Filming Despite Major Script ProblemsSubmit Comment
Disney CEO Robert Iger needs "Star Wars: Episode VII" to hit theaters during the summer of 2015. And even though that summer is stuffed with other highly-anticipated blockbusters, the release will put the "Star Wars" franchise on track to have two more sequels and two spin-offs out within a six year period.

The problem is that the script may not be ready, which is why producer Kathleen Kennedy has been pushing for the film's release date to be moved to 2016. Iger isn't even considering such a move, despite knowing that a successful future hinges on "Star Wars: Episode VII" turning out well.

Director JJ Abrams apparently agrees with Kennedy that the script needs more time, but is also convinced that the 2015 release date must be met. He recently replaced Michael Arndt (Troy Story 3) as the writer and is in the process of casting.

I have a bad feeling about this.

The force is with you young JJ but you are not a good director yet!!

Surprise, surprise. Sometimes Hollywood amazes me with it's single-minded idiocy. Not even NASA is as anal with launch date deadlines; if sh*t needs to be reworked, they'll push back.

But studio execs are like freaks. A May 2015 for this movie was premature ejaculation no matter how you look at it. From nothing -- literally, NOTHING -- to nationwide theatrical release, a Star Wars movie needs at least a solid three years.

With a rush job and with Abrams at the helm (and also pen) they'll crank out something that resembles a movie, insofar to be sold as a product, I'm sure of it. It might even be distractingly watchable, at least once, like Into Darkness. A memorable Star Wars move, how ever, it will not make.

And, please, spare the "can't be any worse than the prequels" bullsh*t retort. Yes, it can. The prequels were their own thing, at least. Episode VII will just be every recent blockbuster mushed into one, just like every OTHER blockbuster. f*ck off with this movie.

Cannon rant, officially over.

Nice rant Cannon.

Yeah, take your damn time. Gonna have to re-Watch them all before it comes out lol

I don't see the need for a summer 2015 move. They have the new Avengers movie, Ant-Man and I believe a new Pixar movie opening then. They are good to go.

Why not release it on December 18th, 2015? Just in time for the year-end holidays when families all come together and(as stats show) go to the movies.

Star Wars has a TON of cross-generational appeal, everyone from kids to people who were kids when the first film came out will want to go see Episode 7. Keeping the 2015 date will also allow them to stick to this 'six yer plan'

@ManInBlack: Not sure if u seen the other 2 cinematics, but they were equally impressive. If Bioware were to release a some sort of CGI series I'd b all over it

@BadChadB33 & boogiel
Your opening lines...well played gentlemen.

@everyone
Not much to say other than I hope they can fix the script. It will be a war. If anything James Cameron was right about it is what he said about filmmaking being a war between the creative and business aspect. So here is hoping the creative side wins out.

I guess the movie boy decided not to review Ender's Game in light of Card's stance on gay marriage. Either that, or the Halloween cat orgy he was involved in kept him busy all night.

Bad vibes on this. Never start filming without a proper script. That's film-making 101. Whenever a studio acts like they can rewrite every rule because they believe a franchise to be so exceptional to the rules, you get disaster. Please, J.J., don't film it yet. Get the story right!

This is the problem with summer tentpole syndrome. You need your big summer blockbuster that will make enough money to cancel out all your other failures. So you pick something, like Xmen 3 or MIB 3, set the release date in stone, and start shooting without a finished script, just to meet some arbitrary timetable.

Disney needs a big new hit. All they have are Pixar movies, Marvel movies, and Pirates of the Caribbean. And after John Carter and The Lone Ranger, they're getting desperate. They know the first film will be a big hit even if it's complete sh*t (see; Phantom Menace).

Hollywood blockbusters. Quantity over quality and speed over substance. And then people are surprised that the final product is so messy, stupid, boring, overlong, and expensive.

Troy Story 3 must've been one helluva movie!
Deaft0ne writes:

Forcing the filmmakers to meet some stupid Summer 2015 release date will be disastrous and I don't think that Ep VII will necessarily be the biggest hit over that Summer anyways. It's not guaranteed to be just because it's a Star Wars movie.

A Christmas Day 2015 release would work much better and it would easily make a billion+ at that time.
