"Highlander" Reboot Hires Director, Filming to Begin Next Year

"Highlander" Reboot Hires Director, Filming to Begin Next YearSubmit Comment
At one point, Justin Lin (Fast and Furious 6) was set to direct the upcoming "Highlander" reboot. He eventually dropped out, but stayed on as an executive producer. Now comes word that the film has found his replacement.

Summit Entertainment announced that it has hired Cedric Nicolas-Troyan to direct the new movie, which has a script by "Iron Man" writers Art Marcum and Matt Holloway. Nicolas-Troyan will be making his feature film debut, but has worked as a visual effects supervisor and second unit director on "Snow White and the Huntsman."

There were plenty of other better known directors competing for the job, but Nicolas-Troyan proved to be the most knowledgeable about the franchise, including all the movies and the TV series.

He will now supervise a re-write of the script and then get ready for filming in 2014. Casting will soon begin. Ryan Reynolds was once attached to play the lead role, but has since dropped out.

The original movie was great, trying to outdo it is gonna be monumental task. Literally.

Truth be told, Highlander is really isn't a "great" film. It's fun -- great cast, great soundtrack -- but the filmmaking itself is tragically dated, and I'm not simply talking about the special effects (which are, for the most part, just fine).

The premise for Highlander was always superior to the film itself, and to every lesser version the franchise that followed, and this is coming from someone who was always a fan of the Adrian Paul series. It's a premise that has never really been given the best possible treatment.

I guess what I'm saying here is, this is one of the rare reboots that I consider justified. Of course, the new film could be totally lackluster to downright sh*t. It's just a matter of how seriously they take the material, because there's really a lot of historical romance, mysticism and imagination inherent in aforesaid premise that could go along way if done right.

If they consider Reynolds a good candidate, I'd hire a new casting director to begin with.

Just another classic remake.

Hollywood needs to make more video games movies.

From what I've heard the Kurgan was originally written as a much more sympathetic character and not the comical psycho that ended up on screen. No disrespect to Clancy Brown, who is such a good actor he could have played it either way.

People saying the original film is some kind of masterpiece obviously confuse low-budget cult classics with truly under-appreciated films, as the original film clearly isn't high cinema.

Terrible soundtrack, cheesy acting, horrid sub-Terminator special effects, lackluster acting in the form of Lambert who never gives us more than a rue smile or deadpan stare, and raving pantomiming comedy from a then and still obscure actor playing a reject from the street punk scenes in James Cameron's original Terminator. You almost expect Bill Paxton to show up to ask Lambert if he's a few cans short of a six pack.

Even the sound effects disappoint. Did they not have a dedicated Foley artist at their disposal, or did they use canned effects from dusty Eight-Track recordings?

Not to mention the failure on Connery's brogue-ish accent and random, limited appearances to lend the film a much-needed patina of quality. One wonders if he wasn't added merely for his ability to grow long locks and speak with a heavy, slurred antiquated tongue.

Reboot the f*cker. Can't hurt the franchise, which is very much on the edge of death's doorway, if it hasn't sipped over already, and largely forgotten, except among a few old die-hard holdouts who have those fake store-bought swords above their beds and signed photographs of Adrian Paul next to the toilet.

i agree with cannon but highly disagree with mink, films we like when we were children will always BE class !!!! soundtrack was brillant , actors were good ...u cant say the KURGEN was not a good character ...ive yet to see a better bad guy-evil in every way on screen, point taken as it was done in the 80 s .....it is very dated and it def wont help hurt the original , i just hope they do it justice ...for me not just do i hope they do it right but how on earth can u get a better bad guy than the kurgen nad a better soundtrack ???
