"Bad Grandpa" Dethrones "Gravity" at Box Office, "The Counselor" Bombs

"Bad Grandpa" Dethrones "Gravity" at Box Office, "The Counselor" BombsSubmit Comment
"Bad Grandpa," the latest "Jackass" installment starring Johnny Knoxville, easily took first place at the domestic box office this weekend, grossing $32 million and knocking "Gravity" from the top.

"Bad Grandpa" is the first "Jackass" movie with a plot. And even though it performed very well, it still opened behind "Jackass 3D," which hit theaters in 2010 and grossed a whopping $50.4 million.

Overseas, "Bad Grandpa" earned an additional $8.1 million for a worldwide gross of $40 million. Since the movie cost only $15 million to make, it's already a hit. The film has a 62% fresh rating on RottenTomatoes.

"Gravity" had to settle for second place with another $20.3 million, which brought its worldwide total to $364 million.

The other wide release of the weekend was Ridley Scott's "The Counselor," starring Michael Fassbender, Penelope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Javier Bardem and Brad Pitt. Despite an amazing cast, the film landed in fourth place with a lousy $8 million. Even though the movie cost only $25 million to make and will easily make back its budget, "The Counselor" is considered a huge disappointment. It doesn't help that it has a 35% fresh rating.

Meanwhile, "12 Years a Slave" expanded to 123 theaters in its second week and managed to take eighth place with $2.2 million.

So a movie on the way up barely outperformed a film well on it's way down.

And more proof Ridley Scott doesn't have a clue. Good luck with that Blade Runner sequel.

^^Doubt that'll ever get made. Has that pungent odor of "soon to be cancelled and forgotten".

More proof that Tarantino was right...big name elderly directors have a couple of good projects until they get judgement f*cked up.

Guess that's why Tarantino is on his way to a self imposed retirement.

Regarding Prometheus 2....

Well, maybe, maybe not.

Prometheus made 403 mil on 130 mil, and Lendelhof is off the project, so maybe, but I have no faith Paglen can write a screenplay FOX will greenlight seeing as he had to have Wally Pfister do a rewrite of his Transcendence script, and then two more writers had to re-write that sh*t.

They should have hired Arndt instead...

Ok, now Im reading Philip K. d*ck's UBIK then a Selected Anthology of works by Charles Baudelaire.

I really wanted to like Prometheus. I mean, is a shame people like Alejandro Jodorowsky or Godard can't have access to that kind of budget. Not only are they film directors but also writers of their own material.

As for Mr. Scott, I really wanted to pull this movie off the ground in a very inquisitive and great, fun and deep way.

Well.

The Counselor was pretty boring. A lot of drawn-out scenes that were too long. Honestly I've never seen so many people getting up for piss breaks during a movie.

@CelluloidMan: Look, Lindelhof had no business writing Urethreus and McCormac had absolutely no business writing his own screenplay for The Counselor.

In the case of both recent Scott failures, the screenplay alone let audiences down.

Scott needs to pick better screenplays, scripts people wish to see made into movies, if he wants to continue his third-act career.

I can't wait to see Bad Grandpa, always liked that character from the Jackass films

Bad Grandpa was really funny and also surprisingly sweet-natured. But you can tell that a lot of people know almost right away that it's Johnny Knoxville in makeup and the end credits show some of the reveals.

I finally had the chance to see Gravity in 3D yesterday. I must say it is hands down one of the best films I have seen this year. The 3D was exceptional and the pacing was pretty intense throughout. There were a couple of times I actually jumped from debris coming towards the screen. U definitely need to check it out if you haven't yet
