Robert Zemeckis to Direct Memory Loss Film "Marwencol," Leonardo DiCaprio May StarSubmit Comment
Director Robert Zemeckis (Flight, Cast Away, Forrest Gump, Back to the Future) is developing a new film based on the 2010 documentary "Marwencol," about a man finding a unique way to deal with severe memory loss.

The man is Mark Hogancamp, who was attacked and beaten by a group of teenagers that left him in a coma that lasted nine days. When he woke up, he had no memory of his life, his friends or his family. As a form of therapy, he began building a one-sixth scale model of a World War II-era Belgian village in his backyard, filled with figures made in the image of him, his friends, and his attackers. While the process mends his mind to a certain extent, it also lets him escape into a fantasy world in which he creates various scenarios with the figurines.

The documentary focused on Hogancamp as he is suddenly forced to make a choice between the safety of his fictional town and the real world beyond it.

The script is being written by Caroline Thompson (Edward Scissorhands, The Nightmare Before Christmas) and aims to blend fantasy and reality. While casting has yet to begin, Zemeckis would like Leonardo DiCaprio to star.

I have a sneaking suspicion Marwencol is some kind of anagram...

EDIT: Nope. Just a really sh*tty title.

In other words, he's the typical Star Wars toy-collecting, fat, smelly dateless loser, only he can't remember how much he sucks?

Yeah, I think I'll just watch clips of Comic Book Guy instead.

Really wanted him to get involved in a cooler project...good for a start though.

The guy is very underrated, IMO...his filmography consists of some major all-time classics.

Yeah, underrated, in that he did two or three awesome movies and yet still made What Lies Beaneath, which wouldn't have been all that bad if he and his editor had caught the shot of the kid staring straight into the camera for two or three seconds, a mistake you'd never see Kubrick or Cameron make...

Zemickis is right where he belongs.

Caroline Thompson hasn't worked on the script for months. Zemeckis has been rewriting it himself over the summer.

The doc is actually quite interesting, and I trust him to make a good film. Bob is a great director and I love the fact that he's decided to forgo big comic book films or blockbusters in favor of interesting character pieces (ala Flight).

Also, hoping to help out editing this one, too. :)

Marwencol is actually a pretty solid doc*mentary. Recommend checking it out.

Romancing the Stone
Back to the Future 1-3
Forrest Gump
Who Framed Roger Rabbit? (Academy Awards)
What Lies Underneath

And a major producer on The Frighteners, jump starting Peter Jackson's career.

2-3 hit movies? Try seven...

And a kid looking at a camera for 2-3 seconds flushes a director's decades full of movie hits? Yeah...that seems reasonable.

Plus...Zemeckis being compared to Kubrick or Cameron? I rest my case.
