Director Says "National Treasure 3" Should Happen in Two Years

Director Says "National Treasure 3" Should Happen in Two YearsSubmit Comment
"National Treasure" hit theaters back in 2004 and went on to gross $348 million worldwide on a budget of $100 million. Considering the budget, the film wasn't considered a huge hit, but a sequel was greenlit. That sequel was released three years later and grossed a whopping $457 million.

Clearly there's a fan-base for this franchise, but Disney has yet to move forward with a third installment. Now that director Jon Turtletaub is promoting his "Last Vegas" film, Collider asked why we have yet to see "National Treasure 3."

"It's so damn hard to write a great historical mystery based on fact," he replied. "We want to do the movie. Disney wants to do the movie. We're just having the damnedest time writing it."

Turtletaub continued: "I'd say we're about half-way there. It's not only writing a great historical mystery, but we've gotta write something that has nothing to do with anything we've done before. We really want to make sure that the third one doesn't just feel like a repeat of the first one."

When asked if he believes "National Treasure 3" will ever happen, he replied "I do. I'll bet that within two years, we'll be shooting that movie."

Would've rather seen National Treasure 3 than Pirates 5.

Nic may finally have a hit on his hands. It'll be it'll be his first since the last movie was out.

Didn't really care for either film, but they had a more adventurous, swashbuckling nature and better story than INDY IV: KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL

Trashy as they may be, I have a soft spot for both of the Natl Treasure films... they're leaps and bounds better than either DaVinci code movie, or the most recent Indiana Jones film (although that's not saying much). Personally I would love to see the franchise extended.

I used to play poker with Carlo Bernard, he was a friend of a friend. He's part of the writing team that wrote Prince of Persia and Sorcerer's Apprentice, and for a spate of time, they were working on the National Treasure III script. I was glad when the script got taken away from him, because he's a sh*t writer, and was kind of a toolbag personally. Hopefully someone else will make it work.. maybe the Wibberleys will take a crack at it again.

Does nobody remember Rush Hour 3, Godfather 3, or The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor?

You can't wait too long to make a third sequel. Even if that National Treasure franchise (shudder) was a thing that existed in a reality where people wanted to see more of it...it's still going to bellyflop hard.

In two years, that'll be an 8 year gap between films. If the Spiderman franchise has taught me anything, its that after 5 years, its time to reboot.
