"Hot Wheels" Film Moving Forward, Director and Story Revealed

"Hot Wheels" Film Moving Forward, Director and Story RevealedSubmit Comment
Legendary Pictures just signed Simon Crane to direct its upcoming "Hot Wheels" movie, based on the popular Mattel toy line. Paul Attanasio (Quiz Show, The Good German) is on board to do a rewrite of the script.

The story centers on a washed-up Illinois State Trooper who, after a dangerous military device falls into the hands of a criminal, fights the man his father once put behind bars.

"Hot Wheels" has been in development for years with such directors as McG (Terminator Salvation) and Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later), and writers Cormac Wibberly (National Treasure) and John Gatins (Flight).

The movie will be Crane's directorial debut, but he's considered one of the best second-unit directors, having worked on such films as "World War Z," "Men in Black 3," "Salt" and "X-Men: The Last Stand."

World War Z, Men in Black 3, Salt, and X-men The Last Stand. That is a resume of sh*t.

Wait I remember this sh*t! John Dykstra, visual effects master, left Spider-Man 3 to do this sh*t! Thanks for taking f*cking years! The effects in the third one sucked without this guy!

A movie about Hot Wheels?!

Will it be about these grown ass men collector going around the world buying special limited edition cars and how the transfers them home to store them away until the car's values go up?

No?! Could've fooled me...

This will be about as connected to the actual toys as Battleship was to the board game. Anything to make money off a trademarked named.

Yeah yeah yeah, and another film production company will counter this by developing "Matchbox: The Movie"...
minkowski writes:

^^I thought about say something similar, but I remembered that Mattel owns the rights to both Matchbox and Hot Wheels.

+ing.

So many f*ckups, so little time.

Wow, you're right... from Tyco to Mattel in 1997.

Okay, new plan: Legendary Pictures (or some other film production company under the Universal umbrella) develops "Matchbox: The Movie". Then, at some point after both films have been released, a "Hot Wheels vs. Matchbox" film will follow.

Universal's Avengers/Batman vs. Superman... WITH CARS.

I wonder if Hasbro is dreading the possibility that they might lose both Marvel and Star Wars to Mattel (the toy company for all of Disney's other properties) as early as 2020.

cress writes:

Disney seems pretty comfortable letting Hasbro continue as the premiere toy maker for their tentpole films. Besides, Hasbro has a very strong sales history with the STAR WARS brand, and Disney would be idiots to sever ties now(or in 2020) and have Mattel start making funky looking, inferior products.

Gotta agree with Cress at this point, in that Hasbro currently has the advantage in toy manufacturing over Mattel, especially as Hasbro often serves as a mainline distribution for Japanese toy manufacturers, e.g., Takara.

All I want to see is origin films for each and every Hot Wheels cars, like the one that looks like a crouching white rat with wheels for legs and has a carburetor or something coming out of its ass...
Donald Duck writes:

^^lol, sure, why not? Follow the same model as the upcoming Star Wars films: a "main storyline" movie followed by two or three "side" films about the origins of the freak-cars that you mentioned.

Dammit, Mink, I like it when we're not at each others throats all the time. I'll savor this rare occasion of agreement until our next argument. :)
