Why Charlie Hunnam Really Dropped Out of "Fifty Shades of Grey"

Why Charlie Hunnam Really Dropped Out of "Fifty Shades of Grey"Submit Comment
It wasn't long after Universal Pictures announced that Charlie Hunnam was cast as Christian Grey in the upcoming "Fifty Shades of Grey" movie that the studio was announcing that the actor dropped out.

The official press release stated that Hunnam's TV schedule was getting in the way of his preparations for "Fity Shades of Grey," but that excuse didn't seem right to many, especially since it's not that difficult to find out when Hunnam needs to be available for his "Sons of Anarchy" TV series.

Now comes word from The Hollywood Reporter that there was much more to the story. It seems that Hunnam accepted $125,000 to star in the film. A lot of money, but nothing compared to the $5 million that "Fifty Shades of Grey" author EL James received for the rights to the books.

Apparently Hunnam had serious creative differences with the filmmakers. He first did a script review and submitted his notes. When that went ignored, Hunnam fought for script approval. That was rejected. And even though the studio brought on Patrick Marber (Notes on a Scandal) to make some adjustments to the script, it seems that Hunnam's concerns were not addressed.

So clearly Hunnam didn't like certain parts of the script. That's not surprising since many believe the studio would need to make a porn movie to stay close to the story in the books. Things then escalated when Hunnam was forced to hire bodyguards for some of his "Sons of Anarchy" appearances. He even skipped a few out of fear of dealing with some crazy "Fifty Shades of Grey" fans.

Finally, when his "Sons of Anarchy" fans started complaining, and "Fifty Shades of Grey" fans started collecting signatures to have him replaced, that was enough for Hunnam. And despite potentially burning a bridge with Universal Pictures, the actor dropped out.

I think he made the correct choice. He also strikes me as a serious enough actor to pull off the risky scenes that would be needed to make this film any good.

I just think that you can't make a film like this without being super graphic, if you don't show anything then it defeats the purpose of the book.

I read the first book and found it stupid and put women in a worse light than BELLA from Twilight. Without the Smut it was just a basic romance.

Good. Let some talentless nobody fill the roles' shoes and let this terribly written saga end.
This honestly the worst book I've read. There's a reason why it's fanfic and it shows why it should have just stayed on the internet web pages only.

He has my heartfelt sympathy. What a tragedy. Here, let me strum an single-instrument orchestration of Serenade of Sorrows on my tiny violin.

Hunnam should write all this up into a book or something and call it "Fifty Shades of Who Gives A f*ck?". Instant NYT bestseller, but then what isn't these days?

The last cool erotic movie I saw with my girl that we both lenjoyrd was Secretary with Maggie Gylenhall and James Spader. It's f*cking fetish with a love story... got a boner & my girl was all smiles. It was a win win.

That's what 50 Shades of sh*t should aim for (or maybe was influenced by?), but I really doubt it will be that well done or received.

As it is all the talkshows/ news are all talking about it and I can already see being built up. When it comes out those same shows/ news will have Bible Waivers/ picketers, priests, and sexologists covering every aspect of the issue...and all by a probably substandard gratuitous, "sexy thriller" of a movie...

The author will be the only one laughing to the bank before its fad runs out and then the studios will be waving too much money shoved in her face to do a do a sequel or another similar book to only come out with a lame result...

Seen it all before...
