Eating Popcorn in Theaters Makes You Immune to Advertising

Eating Popcorn in Theaters Makes You Immune to AdvertisingSubmit Comment
When going to movie theaters, customers are often hit with plenty of commercials before the film actually starts playing. The marketing teams behind those commercials use repetition and other psychological techniques to make sure that their brands are not easily forgotten. But according to new research, all those techniques become useless if a movie-goer is chewing on popcorn while watching those commercials.

Researchers from Cologne University discovered that chewing interrupts our "inner speech," which happens when we hear a new name of a person or company and react by moving our lips and tongue to simulate the pronunciation of that name. This is done without us even knowing and helps us to remember.

In the first test, researchers asked 96 people to watch a series of commercials. One half of participants were given popcorn, the other half didn't. It turned out that the commercials had no impact on those who ate popcorn throughout.

During the second test, 118 participants were given some money and asked to purchase one of six moisturizers and then donate the product to one of six charities. But before the test, the people were asked to watch commercials where three of six moisturizers and three of six charities were advertised.

Once again, those who were chewing on popcorn chose products and charities randomly, while the other group consistently chose products and charities from the commercials.

wow people spend way too much time studying bullsh*t...there's other things in the theater besides popcorn, i ate candy through commercials before a movie...remembered some things and didn't, point being: people can multitask, they can chew popcorn and pay attention to commercials, the simple fact is this test should have been more widened...in other words, they should use commercials/products that people couldn't give a flying f*ck about, and commercials/products that are just impossible to forget...i mean where's the logic in these tests?...i don't go to college but i'll bet these students didn't think to try different commercials...would give their test a whole new set of results

Fred Willard can paint the back of the theater seat in front of him while he watches a movie.

i'm translating the article headline to 'eating popcorn or anything else in theaters helps make time pass through boring and easily forgettable advertisements'...because 9.99999 times out of 10 commercials are sh*t and rarely offer anything useful

It's not the popcorn, you silly. It's how much money in your wallet that keep you immune from advertising.
