"Gravity" Continues to Dominate, Crushes "Captain Phillips" and "Machete" at Box Office

"Gravity" Continues to Dominate, Crushes "Captain Phillips" and "Machete" at Box OfficeSubmit Comment
Tom Hanks' new "Captain Phillips" film was showing strong numbers early in the weekend. But now that the domestic box office results are in, "Captain Phillips" had to settle for second place since "Gravity" had another strong weekend, grossing $44.3 million.

"Gravity," which still has a 97% fresh rating on RottenTomatoes, has now surpassed the $100 million mark domestically, earning a total of $123.4 million in ten days. Overseas, however, the film has taken in only $68 million, for a worldwide total of $191.4 million.

"Captain Phillips," which is already being named a potential Oscar contender, ended up with $26 million. While not an impressive figure, the film is already considered a hit since it had a better opening than many last Hanks' movies (liked "Cloud Atlas" and "Larry Crown") and is performing better than last year's Best Picture winner "Argo" ($19.5 million), which opened during the same weekend last year.

"Captain Phillips" cost $55 million to make, putting it on track to early become profitable. It also has an excellent 94% fresh rating.

The other wide release of the weekend was "Machete Kills," which landed in fourth place and likely ended the franchise due to its poor performance. The sequel grossed a lousy $3.8 million, the worst wide opening of director Robert Rodriguez's career.

The first installment, "Machete," opened in September of 2010 to $11.4 million. Since the movie cost only $10.5 million, it was considered a hit. The sequel, which has a 30% fresh rating, likely cost much more and will struggle to break even theatrically. Sorry "Machete Kills Again" and "Machete in Space."

On the specialty side... It seems that Disney made the right decision not to sue "Escape From Tomorrow" and give it inadvertent free publicity since it earned only $66,100 from 30 theaters. It's fresh rating is 59%. Other notable releases were "Romeo and Juliet" ($509,000 from 461 theaters, 24% fresh rating), "The Inevitable Defeat of Mister and Pete" ($260,000 from 147 theaters, 87% fresh rating), "Ghost Team One" ($8,500 from 15 theaters), and James Franco's "As I Lay Dying" ($6,000 from 1 theater).

In other words, all the new specialty films did not perform well and will not be able to expand to a wide release.

MACHETE STALLS

After the film's box office failure, Danny Trejo was seen drowning his sorrows in a bowl of Gravy Train.

Trejo was contantly being followed around on the MACHETE KILLS set by a guy with a plastic bag, who would pick up his poo and put it in the proper receptacle.

Good news for Universal Pictures, as they can get Trejo for cheap now as the male lead in 50 SHADES OF GREY.

Escape from Tomorrow was f*cking trippy. I liked it a lot. The ending was kind of a let down, but overall considering how it was made it was very creative. Had a twilight zone feel to it. The many conspiracies involved were interesting. 7/10.

Whatever. I enjoyed Machete Kills. How many movies feature Cuba Gooding Jr. unmasking his own face to become Lady Gaga?

...or Mel Gibson is space?

Side note, i just upgraded my phone to the galaxy S4 and this ghetto site barely runs on it, what a mind f*ck.
