Quentin Tarantino Explains Why "The Lone Ranger" is in His Top Ten Favorite Film of 2013

Quentin Tarantino Explains Why "The Lone Ranger" is in His Top Ten Favorite Film of 2013Submit Comment
Quentin Tarantino recently unveiled his top ten favorite films of this year, so far. On that list was "The Lone Ranger," which was one of the biggest flops of the year. In a new interview with a French newspaper, Tarantino explained his choice.

SPOILERS AHEAD:

"The first forty-five minutes are excellent. The next forty-five minutes are a little soporific," he said. "It was a bad idea to split the bad guys in two groups; it takes hours to explain and nobody cares. Then comes the train scene, incredible! When I saw it, I kept thinking, 'What, that's the film that everybody says is crap? Seriously?"

Even though he liked "The Lone Ranger," there's a specific violent scene that he felt hurt the movie. "I like Tonto’s backstory — the idea that his tribe got slaughtered because of him; that's a real comic-book thing," he stated. "But the slaughter of the tribe, by gunfire, from the cavalry, it left a bitter taste in my mouth. The Indians have really been victims of a genocide. So slaughtering them again in an entertaining movie, Buster Keaton style... That ruined the fun a bit for me. I simply found it... ugly."

END OF SPOILERS

Tarantino also spoke about Ben Affleck being cast as Batman. "I have to admit that I don't really have an opinion," he revealed. "Why? Because Batman is not a very interesting character. For any actor. There is simply not much to play. I think Michael Keaton did it the best, and I wish good luck to Ben Affleck. But, you know who would have made a great Batman? Alec Baldwin in the '80s."

He sounds like a very contradictory person, almost schizophrenic. Thanks for the stupid update, Alex.

He's not entirely wrong. The Lone Ranger is a good movie trapped inside a bad movie and the bad movie wins out in the end.

Cut out the framing device, streamline the plot, cut it down to 90 minutes, it'd be one of the best movies of this past summer (true, a low bar to hit considering how sh*tty this past summer was but still...)

Black people really were slaves. So enslaving them again in an entertaining movie ruined a bit of fun for me. I found it ugly!!!!!!!!!!

Genious !!
Lone Ranger was an entertaining movie.
-not really sure about his Baldwin opinion, though !!

People are comparing his opinion to Django, but he has a point...it's like comparing apples and oranges.

The big difference? Expectations...

With the Lone Ranger (made by the ones that did Pirates of the Carribean), it was suppose to be kid's or family movie. There was no real reason to kinda fit that into a rock'em-sock'em popcorn movie...what a buzzkill. Looked uneven...should just kept it fun and with action.

As for Tarantino, it was clearly noted as a period drama, a revenge flick and if everyone knows Tarantino...a f*cking bloody one. A different scenario, IMO.

Having said that...Tarantino is the one to talk. I felt the same way about DeathProof. What he felt about the train, I felt about the car. I was more on the edge of my seat with that never-ending chase scenes than his generic characters/ dialogue.

More pointless bloviations from the most over-valued, over-hyped director of all time.
