Darren Aronofsky Says He Created New Animals for Noah's Ark Film "Noah"

Darren Aronofsky Says He Created New Animals for NoahSubmit Comment
Darren Aronofsky's $140 million "Noah" film is becoming a real challenge for the special effects company ILM, mostly because the director wants hundreds of animals in the movie and he doesn't want them to look like the animals that exist today.

"We had to create an entire animal kingdom," said Arnofsky. "All the animals in the movie are slightly tweaked; I didn't want the cliched polar bear, elephant, and lion walking onto the Ark; I didn't want the shot of a giraffe's head looking over the rail. I wanted to respect the storyline and think what would have been involved if it all really happened."

He continued: "We basically went through the animal kingdom and pinpointed the body types we wanted. We chose the species and they were brought to life with different furs and colors. We didn't want anything fully recognizable but not completely absurd either."

After he proposed this to ILM, the company told him that this would be the most complicated job they have ever worked on. "It was a nice badge of honor," Aronofsky continued. "I donít think it's the most incredible shot, but I think because of all the hair on the animals it was incredibly complicated for them."

So he's basically playing god in his version of Noah's Ark. How...recursive.

I actually wanna see this movie. Bible stories would make some excellent movies and with today's special effects they would be a breeze to pull off

But it would never happen, Darren, because it's religious nonsense. The point is to embrace said nonsense at face value. So it seems silly to undermine the iconography of Earth's known wildlife aboard the fabled arc with "the logic of what of how it might actually work".

It's the equivalent of making a Star Wars movie where there is no sound in space.

I think he means he wants to be semi-realistic, in that if Noah were to build an ark and try to take much of the animals on hand with him, it wouldn't look like a child's Sunday school depiction, which is understandable.

I just wonder if the unicorn will get more than a cameo this time.

A new species? So what's it gonna be? A liger? A Tigon? Or maybe it's a centaur?

No. Miley Cyrus.

@Mink:

Well, in that case there'd better be a goddamn Dodo bird. And Bigfoot.

I wanna scene where Crowe fights Bigfoot...that ends in a stalemate, and then they become friends.

Aronofsky should take a look at the pictures Bosch made about The Garden of Earthly Delights then show it to the people at ILM and then how to figure out things would become a lesser problem.
