"The Hobbit" Trilogy Costs More Than Double Than "The Lord of the Rings" Trilogy

"The Hobbit" Trilogy Costs More Than Double Than "The Lord of the Rings" TrilogySubmit Comment
Peter Jackson's "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy cost only $281 million to make, mostly due to the fact that Warner Bros decided to shoot all three films simultaneously.

The studio made the same decision with "The Hobbit" trilogy. But according to documents filed in New Zealand, the studio has already spent $561 million on the prequels. And that number doesn't even include additional shooting that took place earlier this year or any of the post-production costs for the second and third films.

It's possible that when all the costs are in, "The Hobbit" trilogy will have a price tag of over $700 million. That number is surprisingly high, considering that Jackson was able to pull of "The Lord of the Rings" films for less than half the money. Even the "Star Wars" prequel trilogy cost only $343 million to make.

But Warner Bros isn't complaining. "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey," the first film in the trilogy, hit theaters last December and grossed over $1 billion worldwide. The next two installments expect to take in similar revenue.

"The Lord of the Rings" trilogy grossed a total of $2.92 billion worldwide. At this point, the next two "The Hobbit" films will have to take in at least $950 million each to catch up.

Due to the success of the first Lord of the Rings film, the crew was able to spend additional money for reshoots and CGI on the second and third Rings film. This isn't included in your 281 million price tag. The final costs (without distribution and promotion) were somewhere north of 300 million. Still a far cry from the Hobbit, but film-making becomes more expensive over time. So not really surprising.

That makes sense because it's half as good and thrice as bloated.

I love how Alex uses the word "than" twice, just like an illiterate imbecile.
