"Hannibal" Creator Wants to Develop New "Star Trek" TV Series

"Hannibal" Creator Wants to Develop New "Star Trek" TV SeriesSubmit Comment
Back in April, Bryan Fuller (creator of "Pushing Daisies" and "Hannibal") revealed that he would like to develop a new "Star Trek" TV series. Since then, there has been almost no news on the topic.

Now, Fuller has provided an update, stating that he still wants to make the series happen, but it's too early to tell whether he'll get the opportunity. "I would love to create a 'Star Trek' show, so that's on my dream docket," he said, adding that "Star Trek" is "such a big universe" that the new show would be able to go to "many different places."

Fuller continued: "I have a very specific idea that I would love to do. We'll see if I ever get the opportunity."

When Fuller was just starting out in Hollywood, he was a writer on both "Star Trek: Voyager" and "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine."

Good luck buddy. JJ probably killed any chance you had.

That's where Star Trek belongs on the small screen.

Reported on this weeks ago. I think it's called Star Trek: Renegades or some sh*t.

Maybe that was different news. Cant recall. Zzzzzzz.

@mink renegades is a different thing altogether. Thats a show led by Tim Russ who played tuvok. It started as a quasi fan film that happened to have actual star trek actors it like russ, nichols, and koening.

That was called Star Trek: of gods and men. Was an alternate reality universe like the mirror universe with correlations to terrorism. Its feature length and available on youtube. Bad writing, effects and hokey acting outside of the 3 mentioned.

made a sequel in the last year as well. Then this past summer they announced they would be making it into a web series.

If you REALLY REALLY love trek and need it bad then watch it. otherwise its kinda a waste of time. Its not a continuation of past events. Id compare it quality wise to the worst episode of TOS acting and effects wise and worst enterprise writing wise.

but to some people trek is trek. No matter how bad of quasi unofficial

Yeah, I saw that ST: GOM sh*t on youtube. I watched about five seconds and clicked it off. Horrible. It's like they were aiming low. Like they said, look, TOS is crappy because it was cheap television fifty years ago, so we can do almost as good now for nearly free. Or something. Horrible editing, acting, direction, everything.

What they need to do is jump the series ahead about a century. Do the Enterprise J. Come up with all kinds of killer sh*t. Unfortunately, without Roddenberry, you'll get something like Enterprise or Voyager. Piller, Berman and Braga are no substitute, and it seems they've go one off to do better projects anyway.

Seems pretty dead to me. On the other hand they could let fans write spec scripts for episodes again, but they had better hurry because the Baby Boomers, the folks with the deepest Star Trek ethos and respect, aren't getting any younger.

@mink. Theres a guy named crawley who spent millions recreated the TOS sets and costumes. Then went out and found all the unused TOS scripts and scripts for the scrapped star trek phase two series that was abandoned in the 70's to make TMP instead.

its the same ship, same original crew. But staring crawley and a bunch of borderline amateur/rich people playing actor. Quality wise its alot like the 60's show, style too. They are more enjoyable at least. Still not good trek tho.

I think they should set it a decade or two after voyager. Paramount cant make a new show. And cbs telivision only has rights to characters and designs relating to the past franchise shows.

so they most logical thing to do for a new show would be to use certain assets and characters from TNG, DS9 etc but set it far enough apart to be its own thing.

kind of like how DS9 is to TNG. Its obvious they are same universe, have minimal crossover storywise and character guest stars. But all in all it was its own thing and very independent.

If they can figure out how to do that, and be quality trek then ill watch. How that would sell to the current climate of TV watchers is however a whole different thing in and of itself.

I honestly do not think there is a place for REAL trek on a big network anymore. It would have to be cable, but then u have budget concerns there. There just isnt a big enough audience out there for intelectual sci fi on tv like there used to be.

only thing I can see happening is some kind of joint venture between cbs and netflix. The number one property for netflix streaming right now is star trek.

if cbs agreed to allow exclusive repeat showings and access to the show, not allowing it to go to standard syndication for a period of time then I think a co financed show could work and mitigate the budget costs for both parties.

then the ratings will not be as big of a worry. Still would need good ratings, but not like one would need to survive if only cbs was footing the bill

You may be wrong about the Paramount/CBS thing, Vincere. When Viacom split, CBS took the old episodes, and Paramount took the films, but it's not clear who can make new shows. It may be that only CBS can make original timeline shows and Paramount can make a show set in Abrams universe. Or it may be that Paramount could make a new Trek if they set far enough in the future.

I do really like Singer's Federation idea though, but before they go there they might want to explore some time between the 24th century and the third millennium.

@mink. My understanding, through reading interviews with former trek show runners/writers, interviews with jj and other bad robot people and different peoplr claiming to be insidr sources.

jj stated already his plan was to have a series alongside his films, and merchandizing etc. But paramount only has rights to films and cbs has rights to tv. They would have to work together if jj wanted to bring about a new show.

however cbs could still make a show based on what rights they already have. So paramount cant because they cant get along with cbs. And cbs it seems wont because fear of how it will succeed in todays climate.

ideally they would like to make a show more like the new movies, action and fast paced and set in the new timeline. A sister show to the movies. But its classic rights battling and who gets the best deal thats keeping it.

if into darkness had made a billion I could see paramount doing a any price to make it happen deal, but since it kinda came out lukewarm im afraid its limbo for now.

I would prefer a old school concept series like the 90's but im afraid its just not monetarily feasible in todays market. The new movies have proved at least that much true.

our best hope is in netflix, thats where this will die or spring to life

I remember as a kid hanging with Shatner and going his ranch a lot since I was neighbors and friends with two of his grandsons. Even then, being 10 and not knowing who he was, I always thought of him as a jerk. The ass even yelled at me once for swearing. Please no more Star Trek and PLEASE no more Shatner.
