Hugh Jackman Joins Neill Blomkamp's Robot Film "Chappie"

Hugh Jackman Joins Neill BlomkampSubmit Comment
Even though Neill Blomkamp's "Elysium" didn't become a hit like Sony Pictures hoped, it was recently reported that the studio re-teamed with the director for his next film, a sci-fi movie called "Chappie."

"Chappie" tells the story of a robot imbued with artificial intelligence who is stolen by two local gangsters who want to use him for their own nefarious purposes. The film will star Sharlto Copley (Elysium, District 9) as the voice of the title character. Ninja and Yolandi Visser, who are members of the rap duo Die Antwoord, will play the two gangsters.

Now comes word that Hugh Jackman joined the project. "I am doing a role in Neill's new film, called 'Chappie,' which we shoot in Johannesburg," confirmed the actor. "I'm there for a couple of weeks at the beginning of next year."

Jackman's character is described as a resourceful CEO who goes up against the gangsters.

More gritty robots from the guy who makes only gritty robot movies. Goddamned one trick pony hack.

Bet you involves immigration and health care issues AGAIN. The robot is part of a society of robots who are considered illegal among the human population. Or...something like that. LOL

@Sleuth: probably, or maybe this is the movie he'll use to push for the legalization of drugs using a contrived and tortured robotic allegory..

@mink
Probably. The fact is that a lot of his messages, while not completely misguided, lack the understand of how the whole system works in doing those things. His ideas are so overly idealistic that it lacks any grounds. This has nothing to with ideals, but the way the world works and if you hope to have solid message to people you need to understand both sides. Yeah you let immigrants into the country but then you screw up the already overcrowded unemployment matter. This guy did alright the first time with District 9 because it was more reliant on the more outrageous concepts like the selling of alien weapons or so on. But Elysium was made as a political statement solely and that is why it didn't work as well.

@Sleuth: my understanding of District 9 is that it is an allegory for South African apartheid, which ended years ago, thanks to Danny Glover.

Hugh Jackman's robot movie? Hmm, where did I see that before?

Another Neill Blomkamp movie. That means 20 minutes of action and explosions...and 100 minutes of getting hit over the head with a hammer made of preachy liberal messages and subtlety-free allegory.
