Video: Lucasfilm Says Visual Effects Will NOT Be Done in Post-ProductionSubmit Comment
During BAFTA in London, Lucasfilm's CTO Kim Libreri announced that computer graphics have become so advanced that the company has been able to use the technology for film-making in hopes of completely eliminating the lengthy and costly post-production process that's needed for big-budget effects films.

Libreri showed a video (watch below) in which actors put on motion-capture suits and then interact in real-time with a digital environment that can be altered in infinite ways, including adding set pieces, changing the time of the day, and adding weather.

"Everyone has seen what we can do in movies, and I think most people will agree the video game industry is catching up quite quickly," he said. "I'm pretty sure within the next decade, we're going to see a convergence in terms of traditional visual effects capabilities - [such as] making realistic fire, creatures, and environments - but working completely interactively."

Libreri added: "We think that computer graphics are going to be so realistic in real-time that, over the next decade, we'll start to be able to take the post out of post-production; where you'll leave a movie set and the shot is pretty much complete."

Lucasfilm is so confident in this concept that it has already started develop short film with the team from the company's special effects studio Industrial Light and Magic (Elysium, Pacific Rim, World War Z).

Yeah, now the sets and effects are done in pre-production...zzzzz.

On the upside, Lucasfilm has much less Lucas than it used to...although this feels like one of his harebrained schemes.

It's a very cool concept, but even better idea would be non-intrusive VR goggles, worn during performances, that are calibrated to the external environment, or a greenscreen "holodecK"-like projection stage that, when filmed, appears green so it is easily comped out.

of course, none of this would change the fact the 3D environments would have to be pre-produced...

That's pretty goddamn rad.

But let's hate on George Lucas anyways because his name is technically in the article, and because he's such a horrible person in general, right?

...right?

^^Who the f*ck is hating on Lucas?

Cool...will hopefully cut the production time having some of the projects ready in a shorter turn around; probably more used in Sci-Fi films?

This shows much promise as a first step into another era of movie-making...

@Mink:

Dreamcast's snide comment aside, I was speaking more in general.

Just Build a fuggin set! Hire real actors and go back to Model making and for gods sake keep Lucas' ass 10,000 miles from the set and script!!!!!!
