James Caan Explains Why He Turned Down "Superman" and "Star Wars"

James Caan Explains Why He Turned Down "Superman" and "Star Wars"Submit Comment
James Caan recently appeared on "The Howard Stern Show" where he confirmed that he was offered the lead role in "Superman," the role that went to Christopher Reeve. He also explained that the original script, written by Mario Puzo ("The Godfather"), was more humorous.

He described one of the scenes: "Clark Kent is just devastated cause [Lois Lane] is so in love with Superman. Physically the office is setup in the [Daily Planet]... In order to get to Clark Kent's office you must pass through Lois Lane's office. So, one day Clark is so pissed off that she is in love with Superman, he says, 'screw it.' And he rips his clothes off and he's got his Superman [costume] on under there. And he says, 'Lois, come in here!' She comes in and looks at him, 'That's sweet Clark, but you're no Superman.' And she walks out."

Caan went on to say that Marlon Brando, who Caan worked with on "The Godfather," begged him to take the role. But he felt it wasn't for him, especially since he had to wear a suit and sign on for two installments.

Stern went on to list a bunch of movies that Caan turned down, including "Star Wars." When asked why he turned down the role of Han Solo, Caan replied: "They didn't want an actor, that's why they got Harrison Ford."

Caan has been telling these Superman stories to anybody who'll listen for decades

and except for a few choice roles, Caan/Ford play the same guy in every movie so i dont know what the f*ck he's talkin about

Caan comes off bitter because now he knows he would have gotten to bang a barely 20year old Carrie Fisher
we would have had Soprano Solo

she already had her vagina made up that she was going to have an affair with somebody

His only good role was in Misery.

Ford is a crazy man and so is Caan. I respect them both.

Alex pulls these nuggets out of his *sshole when there's nothing else to fill the cracks in his article line-up, apparently.

Tomorrow we'll hear about the movies Judy Garland turned down.

Zzzzzz.

Mink was she also up for the role of Han Solo? I feel like every old f*ck in hollywood had a chance at it.

Cristopher Walken would have been the only other person I would have been down to see play Solo. Just because it would have been so f*cking crazy!

He is good in El Dorado, but mostly because he didn't realize his character was the comic relief so it played it straight and it came out right.

What a d!ck thing to say...no need to be petty about missed opportunities.

Everyone likes to forget that before Superman and Star Wars, comic book movies and sci-fi movies weren't taken seriously. 'Real actors' didn't lower themselves to such things (in the same way popular wisdom dictated that 'real actors' didn't do movies until the 1930's or 'real actors' didn't do television up until the 90's).

But then Brando and Hackman took their paydays and Star Wars became a phenomenon and here we are today, where every other movie has a guy in a cape and every successful actor eventually takes a role in a big stupid fantasy/sci-fi/superhero blockbuster. Caan is just pissed he didn't do it first. But hindsight is 20/20, ain't it?

Can was AWESOME in Dogville. Just ONE scene and he owns that movie.
Deaft0ne writes:

Dogville was a pretentious piece of sh*t and Caan failed to elevate it above that. The guy has always struck me as a f*ckin *sshole and with this latest comment from him my feelings are justified.

Agree with elrei...Caan may or may not be an *sshole, but he is pretty awesome. Greatly enjoyed his role in Thief.
