"Man of Steel" Writer Says Superman Should Be Able to Kill

"Man of Steel" Writer Says Superman Should Be Able to KillSubmit Comment
During a recent lecture "Man of Steel" writer David Goyer spoke about whether Superman should be able to kill in the movies, considering that the comic books have always showed Superman not killing anyone, not even his enemies.

SPOILERS AHEAD:

At the end of "Man of Steel," Superman kills General Zod, something that many fans were upset by. But according to Goyer, that was a decision that was difficult to make, but was ultimately necessary.

"We were pretty sure that was going to be controversial. We weren't just doing it to be cool," he said. "We wanted to put the character in an impossible situation and make an impossible choice. So the situation was, Zod says 'I'm not going to stop until you kill me or I kill you.' The reality is no prison on the planet could hold him."

Goyer went on to say that movies shouldn't have to stick to the rule of Superman not killing. "This is where I disagree with some of my fellow comic book writers. I believe when you're writing film or television, you can't rely on a rule that exists outside of the narrative of the film."

But that doesn't mean that Superman will continue killing. Goyer hinted that "Man of Steel" was a story of Superman becoming Superman. "Our movie was in a way 'Superman Begins,' he's not really Superman until the end of the film," he explained. "We wanted him to have had that experience of having taken a life and carry that through onto the next films. Because he's Superman and because people idolize him he will have to hold himself to a higher standard."

"Man of Steel" Writer Says Superman Should Be Able to Kill

Duh! It doesn't take a genius to figure that out. The main point is that although he more than capable to kill, most likely he will choose NOT to do it. THAT is one of Supes' trademark. Clearly those Hollyweird writers don't have a clue.

@Deaft0ne
Nothing to say about the movie. Goyer just doesn't respect any material. Like Batman, sure he kept some material straight, but this just showed how bad he really is at it. I mean seriously Goyer...read a f*cking comic book!!!

"Man of Steel 2: Superman Kills"

Has a better ring to it than Superman Lives.

Looking forward to Goyer's other projects, "Batman vs. Superman: Killing Spree" and "Justice League: Merchants of Death."

Well, Grant Morrison or someone else profoundly compromise with this material should write those scripts.

I磎 telling you because I had recently read Morrison磗 take on Animal Man and his Doom Patrol arc, and it was really good stuff, the only stuff I had read from him about more massive characters was his take on Batman in that Arkham Asylum GN, and his All Star Superman mini-series.

One more things, Batman Returns is the best movie in the whole movie story arc.

No need for Origin stories anymore in the lineal and straight way, you know.

"We were pretty sure that was going to be controversial. We weren't just doing it to be cool."

Yes, you were. The whole goddamn movie was nothing but a lame, disrespectful attempt to modernize Superman and make him..."relevant"...for younger audiences. For the hip crowds.

"We wanted to put the character in an impossible situation and make an impossible choice."

And you went about it in manner that was completely tacked-on and nonsensical, seeing that the film clearly doesn抰 give a sh*t about human collateral only until it becomes ever-so-convenient at the last minute, thus robbing the conundrum of any real dramatic power.

So, fail and fail.

Does that seem like someone who says Supes should be able to kill?don't be such a wanker Alex.

The best way to save Man of Steel 2 is to fire both Goyer and Znyder.MOS was alright but the third act wasn't something I was happy with.Hoping the sequel will be better

I wonder what would have happened if Superman had just knocked him out, then taken him to a planet that orbits a red sun.

or does that make too much sense
