Ron Howard Says "The Dark Tower" is Still Happening

Ron Howard Says "The Dark Tower" is Still HappeningSubmit Comment
It's been a while since we first heard about a film based on Stephen King's "The Dark Tower," which will be directed by Ron Howard and written by Akiva Goldsman. The project, which is actually a trilogy of films and a TV series, was eventually turned down by Warner Bros and Universal Pictures, but Howard says that it's still going to happen.

"'The Dark Tower' is something that we're still working on," he said. "We've all taken a vow of silence about the progress, because I don't think I realized how much media interest there was and how much excitement there was."

Howard continued: "Even Stephen King acknowledges it's a tricky adaptation, but to be honest, from a financing side, it's not a straightforward, sunny superhero story it's dark, it's horror. That edge is what appeals to me, the complexities of those characters is what appeals to all of us. So my answer is: it got delayed, it's never gone away. We're working on it, and Stephen is very patient with us."

I definitely enjoy many of Ron Howard's films, but I'm not sure if he has demonstrated that he is the right guy for the job. It would be nice if he produced some horror movies first, or directed one, just so he could get his feet wet with the genre.

@boogiel

My long since thoughts exactly. Howard has always been a low-rent Capra, Spielberg-lite (without Spielberg's edge for horror) kinda director. He never struck me as having the "vision" for depicting Kings fantasy-horror, Dark Tower universe on screen.

Maybe someone like Del Toro or Ridley Scott from the early 80s, but not Howard. That said, he's a filmmaker with enough clout to at least ensure high quality production value. He should stay on as producer and seek out a rising artistic filmmaker looking to prove himself. It usually seems to work better that way.

Well it seems Howard is passionate about this at least! I do enjoy a few of his films, but I don't think he's quite the right guy for this.

Sounds like its still not going to happen though and if it does they will probably screw it up!

f*ck MAKING A MOVIE AND A COMPANION TV SERIES, JUST MAKE IT A GODDAMN HBO MINISERIES

IT'S f*ckING SIMPLE, LOOK AT GOT.

HBO TV SERIES, not MINISERIES.

Yeah, it would be much more sensible to just do The Dark Tower as an HBO series only. Theatrical films are not necessary.

Under The Dome was the biggest series over the Summer so DT on HBO is a no-brainer. Audiences love Stephen King.

f*ck Ron Howard! Give up and put the project in a better director's hands

Ron Howard is the wrong guy to make this series, and would require a hefty budget to do right, which wouldn't sit well with the suits who want high long-term dividends. The fact Ron Howard is pitching the film series is probably one reason they're not interested. Peter Jackson would be a much better bet from their perspective. A grand sense of scale and the ability to drag people to the theater is two things Jackson gets right.

Don't expect this one to get made any time soon.
