Joss Whedon Explains Why He Cast James Spader as Ultron in "Avengers: Age of Ultron"Submit Comment
After rumors that Paul Bettany would voice the villainous Ultron in "Avengers: Age of Ultron," it turned out that director Joss Whedon cast James Spader to play the role. In a new interview, Whedon explained his decision.

"Spader was my first and only choice," he stated. "He's got that hypnotic voice that can be eerily calm and compelling, but he's also very human and humorous. Ultron is not Hal (from '2001: A Space Odyssey'). Spader can play all of the levels. He's the guy to break The Avengers into pieces."

It's still not clear whether Spader would just provide the voice or also get in the motion-capture suit. "Avengers: Age of Ultron" is set to hit theaters on May 1st, 2015.

I agree with Whedon on this one. James Spader have a calm voice and that will be awesome if he can tap the potential to match Hopkins as Lecter. Never did Lecter raise his voice, but he was one of the most terrifying villain Ever.

He won't do the motion capture. Ultron doesn't have a mini-gut, does he?

If Whedon chose him for his voice work, as the article explicitly claims, it stands to reason Spader won't appear as he looks in life. Durrrr.
