"The Butler" Takes First Place at Box Office, While "Kick-Ass 2," "Jobs" and "Paranoia" Flop

"The Butler" Takes First Place at Box Office, While "Kick-Ass 2," "Jobs" and "Paranoia" FlopSubmit Comment
"The Butler," starring Forest Whitaker and Oprah Winfrey, took first place this weekend at the domestic box office, grossing $25 million on a budget of $30 million. The film will easily become profitable, which is great since it won't get much of an international release. "The Butler" has a 72% fresh rating on RottenTomatoes.

"Kick-Ass 2" was forced to settle for fourth place, grossing only $13.6 million. The original film was released in April of 2010 and earned almost $20 million during its opening weekend. "We were disappointed we didn't match the opening of the first movie," said Universal Pictures.

The studio was hoping to at least duplicate the results of "Kick-Ass" and win the box office weekend. But that didn't happen. Even internationally, the film grossed only an additional $6.3 million. But since "Kick-Ass 2" cost only $28 million to make, it will likely be able to break even.

Ashton Kutcher's Steve Jobs biopic, called "JOBS," also performed poorly, despite getting a wide release. The film landed in seventh place with only $6.7 million. It cost $12 million to make, which means that it will likely make back its production budget. But overall, the movie is a complete failure, especially with a lousy fresh rating of 25%.

The other wide release of the weekend was "Paranoia," starring Harrison Ford, Gary Oldman and Liam Hemsworth. The $35 million thriller only managed to earn $3.5 million and has a ridiculously low fresh rating of 4%. The film didn't even make it into the top ten list. It ended up in thirteenth place.

Gosling was okay in Drive and Half Nelson and Lars and the Real Girl and Blue Valentine. Aside from that he is as dull as dishwater. Blue Valentine is good for Michelle Williams's brave performance. It is a sad movie but it is very memorable.

Drive is an extremely overrated movie.after i saw that elevator head bashing scene.i no longer took it seriously.

I liked the supporting cast and christina hendricks melons.

The tight outfits and gloves of gosling were pretty flamboyant.

It is a better movie than that sh*tfest of killing me softly

Blue Valentine is on netflix, I watched it on a whim after scrolling through a sh*t-ton of horror and sci-fi and finding nothing good

It is a tragic film but worth a watch. Anyone that has had a relationship that f*cked up can identify with it.

How many times must I reiterate that a movie having a less than amazing opening doesn't make it a flop.

Life of Pi was called a flop here after it's opening. It grossed over $600 million worldwide on a $120 million budget.

Pacific Rim was called a "massive box office flop" here after it's opening. It's budget was $190 million, and it's at $384 million worldwide, more than double it's budget...and it will make a little more before it's done.

And this isn't even considering things like the home market, future Video On Demand purchases, etc.

Kick-Ass 2 had a budget of $28 million. It's 'break even point' is $56 million. If you don't think it will gross $56 million worldwide, you're crazy.

The term 'flop' should be reserved for ACTUAL flops...like White House Down and The Lone Ranger, films that won't get anywhere near doubling their budget.

@Chris_G: for once, Alex is probably mostly right about his assessment. Paranoia has no chance of making its money back. Jobs is also a flop- it will barely claw back its production budget, and won't make anything outside of the US. Kick-Ass 2 will likely get close to a break-even point, but not much further than that, but the reason it's (mostly) fair to characterize it as a flop is because it missed its expected opening take by a pretty big margin. The bean counters were expecting a $17-22million opening weekend. 13.6million is very disappointing.

gosling was only good in half nelson in my opinon even though I liked drive. Only god forgives was just self indulgent refn felt like making a valhala rising in thailand with less dialogue and plot
Chris_G writes:
on August 19th, 2013 at 1:56:36 AM

I was referring specifically to Kick-Ass 2. The first film pulled in $90 million worldwide, the 2nd only needs to do a little over half of that and it will have broken even.
Deaft0ne writes:

All bando did in the kick-ass 2 thread was profess his gay love for scott ABkins and butcher the english language and trollitude. He never tore anything except his Bloodsport undies.
