20th Century Fox Apologizes to Japanese Audiences for Misleading "Napoleon Dynamite" Title

20th Century Fox Apologizes to Japanese Audiences for Misleading "Napoleon Dynamite" TitleSubmit Comment
Once in a while a movie will be released in a foreign country using a bizarre name that has nothing to do with the actual story. Sometimes the title is different due to legal issues, sometimes the title doesn't translate well, and sometimes the studio is trying to fool the audience by linking their film to a local hit.

The latter is what happened with "Napoleon Dynamite" when it was released in Japan in 2006. It turns out that 20th Century Fox left the title in almost every country, but named the film "Bus Man" in Japan. The studio explained that the title refers to the opening scene that takes place on a school bus, but in reality, Fox was trying to link "Napoleon Dynamite" to an extremely popular Japanese franchise called "Train Man," about a woman who falls in love with a man after he rescues her from an attacker on a train. The studio even copied the font used on the "Train Man" DVD cover.

Now, seven years after trying to deceive audiences, the studio decided to apologize for its actions. According to Fox, the movie will be re-released on home video this October. But it will now be re-titled back to "Napoleon Dynamite" and each copy will come with a letter from the studio asking Japanese consumers for their forgiveness. Part of the letter reads: "It was truly inexcusable for us to take advantage of an opportunity at the time and to give the movie such a title."

And yet we still haven't genuinely apologized for nuking their sushi-eating asses.

In both cases, a little late, I guess.

Why is Bus Man offensive to the Japs, and why apologize now? Doubt they're that easily offended, unlike us candy-assed Westerners.

Retards

What happened to checks and balances over there?

Well, Japan gets what they deserve for *insert rascist comment here*

Any Japanese that saw that movie based solely on a poster
Instead of a trailer/commercial like a normal movie goer got what they deserved
Taco writes:

Why would we apologize for nuking them? We gave them a heads up.
minkowski writes:

Actually the Japanese say they didn't surrender because we nuked them, they say they surrendered because the Russians were massing to the West. Whatever. I hear though they're starting to kick that pacifism thing off. China's looking hungry.

Who in the f*ck cares? That abortion of a movie came out 9 years ago.

Pfft, Japan.

How much you wanna bet I can throw a football over that island?

minkowski writes:

@Avirex: dunno if that's the/only reason, but the first thing I thought of was his avatar...the reason I say that is because in all the years I've been here, this is the first time I can recall him mentioning the movie, or any of the actors therein.

Really, I'd love to see the jap still holding a grudge over that, assuming that there even is such a creature. I know that when I go into an asian film, I dont expect it to have much of anything to do with whatever generic english title it's been given for western release.
