Did Critics Cause "The Lone Ranger" to Fail? Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer Believe They Did

Did Critics Cause "The Lone Ranger" to Fail? Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer Believe They DidSubmit Comment
"The Lone Ranger" was a big flop, resulting in Disney losing hundreds of millions of dollars. There are many reasons why movie-goers didn't want to see the film, but director Gore Verbinski, producer Jerry Bruckheimer, and stars Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer believe the reason for the terrible box office numbers is critics.

Depp believes that the majority of critics made up their minds about "The Lone Ranger" eight months before it was even released and then made it a target of hate. The reason for this, he claims, is because the movie ran into budget problems early in production.

Verbinski says critics also punished "The Lone Ranger" for not being a sequel or a superhero film. Bruckheimer agreed, adding that critics don't like original movies.

But the dumbest comment came from Hammer, who said: "[Critics] tried to do the same thing to 'World War Z.' It didn't work, they weren't successful, and they instead decided to slit the jugular with our movie."

What Hammer doesn't realize is that the reason critics weren't able to hurt "World War Z" is because critics have no real power. That's also why critics couldn't hurt the box office numbers of such movies as "Grown Ups" and "A Haunted House."

Question: Do you believe critics hurt "The Lone Ranger"?

If the film was about the real Ranger (our Ranger) it would have been more interesting. Probably with an NC-24 rating or something, but still better.

No. Simply because the mouth to ear factor always work. There are numerous example for that and Hammer's should know better. He reminds me J-C Van Damme's opinions and look what happened to him.

I actually liked the movie- think it was one of the best modern-made westerns and much better than the Pirates movies !!
That being said...People will probably watch movies even though the are killed in the reviews .
Grown ups 2 was a success ??
I can honestly say, I will never watch that sh*t !!

There were different number of reasons why the lone ranger flopped and yes,the critics review did hurt but not as much as the following:

-bad release date, the more successful summer movies in recent years were released actually in spring - May , this is the time viewers are hungry for blockbusters while in July they're already quite fed up.

-Armie Hammer and Johnny Depp - nobody knows Hammer plus he has zero charisma. and Depp will only do well if it's a kiddie blockbuster like POTC or Alice in wonderland.

-Western - enough said, all westerns flopped in the last 15 years.

Yes, the critics are at fault, because there's an empirically-established correlation between the Tato-meter and how much a film makes in theaters....

As a fan of the original movie
Which was also a bomb and critically snubbed
Mainly due to Stacy Keach dubbing the voice of TLR
And the main actor being a d*ck during filming

I had hopes for this movie
Even after casting Sledge Hammer(remember that show? It came on before the Starman tv show)i had some hope left

But they let Depp have complete autonomy over the portrayal of Tonto
Which was just a constipated Jack Sparrow

You wanna blame somebody
look in the mirror

Just watch the original on youtube

the quality of a film is not always based on the quality of a film but I will not watch the lone ranger because it just looks like pirates set in the west with trains instead of ships

Lone Ranger failed due to
1. Western
2. Depp playing a native american.
3. Bad word of mouth.
4. Bad trailers!
5. Media reports of problems.
6. Critics confirming our suspicions.
7. It just sucked!

@Rambo: You forgot that the film was based on a pop culture character that hasn't been relevant for nearly 40-50 yrs. The target audience knew absolutely nothing about the character. Its a generation that has grown up without the western genre in general, so how can you expect kids to show any interest in the subject matter. They would have been much better off going dark and gritty Nolan style and should have targeted a much older audience (who is actually familiar with the character). Depp should have been the Lone Ranger, and they should have gotten a real Native American to play Tonto.

Lets face it though, the Lone Ranger was never a very charismatic character in the first place. He was always to goodie goodie for a modern audience to appreciate. Zorro was always a much better character. Everyone loves a Robin Hood style outlaw who can handle a sword, talk a little sh*t, and make the ladies cream. Hell, that's why people liked Jack Sparrow! Its amazing that we can see that but the people in charge of making these films can't. Instead, they decided to give us some clean cut truth and justice mofo who's completely out of his element and played by a complete nobody. And they wonder why it didn't succeed....

It seems like everyone knew this film would be a disaster expect the people involved in making it.

Critics hate original movies? That's why Avatar, Inception, and Pacific Rim all had positive responses from the majority of critics?

And The Lone Ranger isn't even original! It's based on a pre-existing property. It's no more original than World War Z and Man of Steel.

Doesn't matter who the f*ck you put in the movie, If it's a western, It ain't becoming a smash hit at the box office.

The reason why The Lone Ranger flop is because of Arime Hammed.

No one knew who he was and that the reason why the film flop.

I mean the actor had no recognition not like Bradley Cooper, Jeremy Renner or Chris Hemsworth.

These guys work their way to the top.

Cooper starred in Wedding Crashers and then in the Hangover.

Renner was in SWAT and then later in The Hurt Locker and after that in Mission Impossible 4.

Remember when everyone thought Thor was going to flop because it had a unknown actor and the director was kind of the wrong choice despite having a great cast and then Thor turned out to be great because of the director, the story and Chris Hemsworth.

What I am trying to say is that it is a big risk to have a unknown actor to be the main character in high budget movie and that the film can only succeed with the right adventment, the right director and a well supporting cast.

dude needs to stfu and take his lumps. go do a couple of low budget indies, maybe a stint on a 'well regarded' cable show, or even better, vanish for a few years. his career isn't over but I doubt he'll be in any summer tentpoles for awhile. pointing fingers isn't helping his cause.
nawtnt writes:
on August 6th, 2013 at 3:13:54 PM

That's right.

Armie Hammer shouldn't start blaming others for the film flopping and man up to decide that he ain't no Depp or DiCaprio but actually a guy who try to make it big in the industry at the wrong time and the wrong place.

lol@Stallone. Willis doesn't give a sh*t. He's old, he makes ten movies a year and he has a hot young wife. Him not being in EX3, a movie series wherein he never had much a role to begin with, isn't much a loss to him, I bet.

Weinstein Cuts ‘Snowpiercer’ by 20 Minutes for US Release

http://screenrant.com/snowpiercer-deleted-scenes-us-theatrical-cut-version/

Apparently the scenes that are to be removed are primarily ones that flesh out the characters’ backgrounds and development, and by getting rid of them, Snowpiercer will come across more as a pure action movie than a drama. The goal...is to make sure the film “will be understood by audiences in Iowa… and Oklahoma.” Weinstein also asked for introductory and closing voice-overs to be added in.
