James Cameron to Shoot Three "Avatar" Sequels Simultaneously, Release Dates Announced

James Cameron to Shoot Three "Avatar" Sequels Simultaneously, Release Dates AnnouncedSubmit Comment
We just reported that James Cameron hired Josh Friedman (War of the Worlds) to help him re-write the script for "Avatar 2." And now comes word from 20th Century Fox, the director is making bigger plans for the franchise.

It was initially reported that Cameron will direct "Avatar 2" and "Avatar 3" back-to-back, but now the plan has expanded to include "Avatar 4." And in addition to Friedman, the helmer also hired Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (Rise of the Planet of the Apes), and Shane Salerno (Savages) to collaborated with him on the screenplays for the next three installments.

All three will be filmed simultaneously with production set to begin next year. The release of "Avatar 2" is now set for December 2016. "Avatar 3" will follow in December 2017, and "Avatar 4" in December 2018.

"Building upon the world we created with 'Avatar' has been a rare and incredibly rewarding experience," said Cameron. "In writing the new films, I've come to realize that Avatar's world, story and characters have become even richer than I anticipated, and it became apparent that two films would not be enough to capture everything I wanted to put on screen. And to help me continue to expand this universe, I'm pleased to bring aboard Amanda, Rick, Shane and Josh -- all writers I've long admired - to join me in completing the films screenplays."

"Avatar" is the highest-grossing film of all time, and is also the top-selling Blu-ray disc of all time.

Seven years after the first? That's the better part of decade. Who will give a f*ck by then?

I have a feeling none of this Avatar business is going to turn out quite like old Cammy thinks. He might make one other, but what historical technological developments will he offer to audiences this time to get people running? Brand name? But Avatar isn't Star Wars, and mistaking one for the other might be his first hubristic overstep.

Instead of making something original like Cameron always did he's only motivated to make more money obviously.

What a shame and disgrace.

@mink

"Seven years after the first? That's the better part of decade. Who will give a f*ck by then?"

Both Aliens and Terminator 2 came 7 years after the first(Bit of a Cameron trend)

Star Wars Episode 1 came 16 years after Episode 6, The Hobbit came 9 years after Return of the King, Star Wars Episode 7 is coming 10 years after Episode 3(32 years after Episode 6)
Chris_G writes:

Terminator 3 was 12 years after the 2nd, Tron: Legacy was 28 years after the first, etc etc.
minkowski writes:
on August 2nd, 2013 at 9:09:07 AM

@Chris: I am aware that not all sequels arrive
immediately, but that wasn't my point. My point is that Avatar isn't Terminator. It's not Aliens. It's not even Fast and the Furious. It sure as f*ck isn't Star Wars.

Even most of the folks who enjoyed the first Avatar aren't salivating to see another one. I know I'm not. I couldn't even finish the BluRay, and believe it or not, it's very, VERY rare I cannot or will not finish a film.

On the other hand, I can watch Aliens, Terminator, even The Abyss repeatedly in a month and never ever get tired of them.

That was my point, specifically, that Avatar just doesn't get people fired up, and by the time Cammy makes another one, in 2016, people may have just forgotten the first one.

He should have struck again while the iron was hot. But no, he needs seven years to make more blue cat people dancing among the tress of Unobtanium, I mean Pandora.

True to form for movies like this, the technology the humans employ in Avatar is poorly suited to combat with the Na’vi to a comical degree. True to my expectation, the villain is killed by arrows shot through the giant glass window of his steel battlesuit. Arrows. Wooden arrows. Against a space marine. Disgusting.

Poor Cameron. Still trying to fulfill his own version of a Star Wars legacy. Still diluted into thinking the first Avatar, despite its financial success, was some kind of pop-cultural shift-turned-instant classic like the original Star Wars was.

Jimbo's got the audacity -- he's got balls -- I'll give him that. But, really, that's all he's got. Because nowhere in sight do I see a genuinely interesting story-pop-myth that's worth revisiting with three more goddamn sequels.

There's really no other clever or crafty way to say it, so I'll just say as simply as possible: Avatar just wasn't that great ...bland, forgettable, dated, vanilla.

guess who wrote that...

'If the cinema is first and foremost about ratcheting up emotions within the viewer, then "Avatar" has not done its job. Sam Worthington (2009's "Terminator Salvation"), Sigourney Weaver (2008's "Baby Mama") and an especially striking Zoe Saldana (2009's "Star Trek") give it their all, but they are let down by James Cameron's negligible pen. Here, he has become so enraptured with his flights of computerized fancy that he has lost track of the film's very substance and soul. Without that, and without much in the way of novel imagination, all that is left are some pretty pictures and a well-meaning, if sanctimonious, advertisement for Greenpeace. Unfortunate though it is, "Avatar" isn't even worth a fraction of its built-in hype.'

Cameron has not made a good film since true lies, ever since he went off the deep end literally leading up to and during and after titanic. Maybe something in the deep blue depths changed him, maybe he has just lost it. I dont know.

but if you have to go all the way back to when arnold was respectable bankable star, tom arnold was comicly relevant(tiny window), jamie lee curtis wasnt saggy and grey, and when elisha dushku was just a kid then thats saying something.

just retire jim, please, while you still have a tiny shred of respect left from audiences and before you completely sh*t the bed as far as looking back 50 years from now on your legacy as a whole.

just STOP

Stephen Lang was the best aspect of it because he is a very good actor and his character represented 'conservatism' but was the most interesting.
