Low-Budget "The Conjuring" Surpasses "Pacific Rim" and "Lone Ranger" at Box Office

Low-Budget "The Conjuring" Surpasses "Pacific Rim" and "Lone Ranger" at Box OfficeSubmit Comment
Almost immediately after Steven Spielberg and George Lucas predicted that big-budget summer films will soon begin to flop, "Pacific Rim," "The Lone Ranger," "White House Down," and "After Earth" did just that.

Each cost around $200 million to make, and while "Pacific Rim" may break even thanks to international ticket sales, the rest of the films will likely lose millions for the studios.

To make matters worse, James Wan's "The Conjuring" horror film, which cost only $20 million to make, has now surpassed all four films domestically. "The Conjuring" reached $86.8 million in just 11 days, which is higher than "Pacific Rim" ($85.2 million), "The Lone Ranger" ($85.5 million), "White House Down" ($70.8 million), and "After Earth" ($60 million). All four were released before "The Conjuring."

"The Conjuring" has yet to be fully released overseas, which means that it has a chance to become an even bigger hit. Regarding whether studios will focus more on smaller films in the future, that doesn't seem the case. You can, however, expect many more sequels and remakes.

Those big budget films wouldn't have failed if they were good.

Too bad for the Lone Ranger as it wasn't that bad, I actually enjoyed that. Depp is quite funny in it.

Well, in the case of Pacific Rim, it was just unfortunate Hollywood politics. WB and Legendary decided to split, so a Pacific Rim sequel would be distributed by Legendary's new partner, Universal Studios.

So WB wasn't about to try and make that movie a huge hit only to hand the franchise to Universal. Man of Steel was their favored summer film, they promoted the living hell out of that movie, and Pacific Rim wound up as an afterthought. An afterthought that still had it's marketing period split with WB's 'The Conjuring'

Magically they can get an R rated horror film to be seen by a larger audience than a huge, PG-13, 'all ages' blockbuster....they gave Pacific Rim the shaft and everyone knows it.

never paid and never will for horror movies and as for the other movies - they were all junk especially 'After earth' which is the first movie I rated 0/10 since 'Cloud Atlas'
