Variety has learned that James McTeigue (V for Vendetta, Raven) has signed on to remake Jean-Claude Van Damme's 1988 martial arts film "Bloodsport," with plans of filming in both Australia and Rio de Janeiro.

Van Damme starred in the original film as American Frank Dux, who is invited to participate in a deadly martial arts tournament called the Kumite. The new film is said to explore Brazil's Vale Tudo fighting style. The script is written by Robert Mark Kamen (Taken).

Meanwhile, Stephen Fung (Tai Chi Zero) has been hired to direct a reboot of Van Damme's 1989 "Kickboxer" film, about a man out to avenge his brother by learning the Muay Thai fighting style.

Van Damme should play a trainer in both movies, he needs the cash.

Jcvd already has his tanning speedo on and his thai body waxer on speaker phone. Coinincedently, neither can understand the others accent so he stays hairy for his begging for -I mean his audition pitch

Bloodsport and Kickboxer was lightning in a bottle as Van Damme vehicles...no one is really gonna replace what Van Damme did in his time...no one.

And all they're doing is peddling the brand name based on solid (or mediocre) films of the past... nothing more.

"Nostalgia re-imaginings" are f*cking scraping the bottom of the barrel!!

So theres no more non-fictional underground fighters to make movies about??

Only Frank Dux?

Well then just crank out BrownTown
the story of Chris Brown and Rhianna ride to The Grammys

These are both essentially the same films any way. Just like all of Van Dammes films. He enters a competition, some big guy becomes his rival, he does a backwards spinning kick that gets repeated to win the final fight.

I heard they're also "re-imagining" Bruce Lee's Enter the Dragon.

First Total Recall, then Robocop and these two movies?

I think Hollywood has run out of ideas, I mean what's next?

The remakes of The Goonies and Gremlins.

Hollywood should not remaking 80's classic movies and make more video game movies.

Maybe this time they wont mention a lying, unproven, self proclaimed martial artist in Blood Sport. Stats that are unproven, knock outs that might never have happened, and a lead character based soley on one mans made up story about himself.

f*ck you Hollywood!! Our offices borderline retard of and intern that can't make coffee could come up with more new ideas than you *ssholes!

Pornfly makes a good point...there's other fighters that had pretty hard obstacles to get where they are...like some of the MMA fighters.

Movie Warrior touched on fictionalized family issues/ needing the money...but I think there's enough for HWood to scrape some tear jerker real life stories.

Worked for Pursuit of Happyness...

If you want to try to remake either of these films, you obviously don't get it. You're going to have to scour the earth in search of a champion kickboxer with almost no acting chops and even less of a grasp of the English language. I loved these movies in high school, because the fighting is good, but also my friends and I loved clowning and quoting Van Damme... he's so bad it's entertaining.

Thus, you'd have to go out and purposefully make a dumb movie... but no a self-reflexively, meta-bad movie for laughs- no, and earnestly, honest-to-goodness badly acted and directed film. I doubt a studio would let you get away with that.
