"Man of Steel 2" Title Likely To Be "Batman vs Superman"

"Man of Steel 2" Title Likely To Be "Batman vs Superman"Submit Comment
When director Zack Snyder announced that "Man of Steel 2" will introduce a new Batman, fans assumed that the film would be called "World's Finest." But writer David Goyer hinted that the title may end up being "Superman vs Batman," "Batman vs Superman," or something else entirely.

In a new interview, Goyer once again spoke about the title, but this time, he seemingly confirmed that it will come down to just one of those two titles. "The next film we're making, we're already in pre-production, comes out in summer of 2015," he said. "We're actually not sure whether the title is 'Superman vs Batman' or 'Batman vs Superman' but yes, it's that rematch, that combination, the two guys onscreen and thatís happening."

It seems that Warner Bros doesn't have a real preference, but looking at the website domain names that the studio registered, the studio will likely go with "Batman vs Superman." Stay tuned.

Okay...so instead of 'Batman', they go with the semi-pretentious "high-brow" alternative of 'The Dark Knight', sweet. Instead of 'Superman' they go with the semi-pretentious "high-brow" alternative of 'Man of Steel'

So...when they do the team-up, instead of going with the built in, semi-pretentious, "high-brow" 'The World's Finest'...they are going to go with a cookie cutter, cartoony name like 'Batman vs Superman'?

Wow.

Let me guess, they will fight each other all through the movie, but in the end they will become BFF's, which will setup the Justice League movie.

Oh and then Robin will get jealous of Batman's new relationship with Superman and become the next villain... or jump off a apartment balcony during Comic Con.

Alex is the only person I've seen consistently wanting to refer to it as "Man of Steel 2." That's like calling The Avengers, "Iron Man 3," "Captain America 2," "Thor 2," "Black Widow & Hawkeye," "SHIELD: The Movie," or "Another Hulk Film."

We don't need to "Stay tuned" because it has yet to be advertised as Man of Steel 2. It's always been, "the follow up to Man of Steel will be a Batman/Superman movie." As in, the follow up to Iron Man 2 will be The Avengers.

In other words, this isn't news. Or rather, it was when it was announced days ago.

I think Chris_G forgets they named the first Batman film Batman Begins, and the second The Dark Knight not because Nolan is pretentious (he is...) but because Chrissy said he wanted a far darker sequel, which is why he kept the name "The Dark Knight" for the second sequel as a continuation of that darkness. They then named the Superman reboot Man of Steel not because they were being pretentious but because they wanted to separate it not only from Donner's film but also from Superman Returns, which came out only a few years previous.

As for World's Finest, I can see why they're not going with it and why they're going with Batman vs Superman. It's a marketing decision, one that puts their product and its content clearly on display. Superman vs Batman. The title markets the movie itself, whereas World's Finest is a hell of a lot more opaque.

If anything, DC is learning they need to market their products in a more grounded way like Marvel.

Fair points mink, but it's still inconsistent.

I was mostly joking about the 'pretentious' nature of the names. But 'The Dark Knight' and 'Man of Steel' do perhaps sound more 'artful' and 'movie-snob friendly' to the ears of some. For whatever reason they kind of have a less silly sound to them...which seems like it tastes better going down for some people.

But going back to 'Batman vs Superman' just feels silly...for some, it would put this in the realm of 'Freddy vs Jason' and 'Alien vs Predator'....not the worst movies on the planet, but B-movies for sure.

"Fair points mink, but it's still inconsistent."

Inconsistent in what way? Because Nolan didn't name his second Batman film Batman Continues, and his third Batman Ends? Should they have named the Superman reboot Superman, even though it would've created a greatly unwanted connection to at least two previous films, one of which (Superman Returns) is essentially the X-Men 3 of Superman films?

To be honest, I think the naming convention they chose was essentially making the best, in a marketing sense, of a bad situation, which is another reason why Marvel has a leg up on DC: no bullsh*t comic book film baggage like Schumacher's Batman films or those two heinous original Superman sequels. A fresh litterbox to lay some clean turds.

There's only one recent DC film with a stupid name, and that's The Dark Knight Rises. I get Nolan wanted to play on the dark part of this title for his second and darker film, but why the hell carry it over? To continue what he started in TDK? Whatever.

"But going back to 'Batman vs Superman' just feels silly...for some, it would put this in the realm of 'Freddy vs Jason' and 'Alien vs Predator'....not the worst movies on the planet, but B-movies for sure."

Oh, I certainly agree with you there. Definitely B-Movie territory, title-wise. No argument from me on that one, Hell, even the animated films have vastly better titles than that sh*t. World's Finest would definitely have a better ring, no doubt.

Anyway, on the day of the news, I think I read at least two or three articles from different people who all essentially said the same thing: DC stinks of desperation, and the fact they're running back to Batman in what should be Man of Steel's sequel means that they have NOTHING to offer now that Nolan and his Batman films are done, and one might wonder if that was ever really true, considering how big a success TDK was because of you know who's death. Hell, Batman Begins was a slow, quite start and then BOOM. The TDKR comes along and people are waiting to see if the sensation will continue, only to be let down by a plodding plot, lackluster villains and Batman overshadowed by Lucius Fox.

So I think DC, even with Batman, their only real achievement, was living on both borrowed time and unearned fame, and now that Man of Steel hasn't broke even the 700 million dollar barrier, and wasn't exactly cheered by the critics or audiences alike, they're running back to Batman hoping his presence can shore up Superman, the other only viable foundation block of the JLA, and let's face it: all roads to success against Marvel run through the JLA.

It all stinks of DC drowning in their own total incompetency and I would suggest WB spin off DC into their own studio and TOTALLY restructure the entire corporate hierarchy. They can start by kicking off of the main decision makers and get someone like Feige on board, which can't feasible be done because they're in a existential struggle with Marvel/Disney. No time.

I think it's, over to be as candid as I can, although if Superman vs Batman is a huge hit, I could be wrong, but if it fails, if it's even a lukewarm success like Man of Steel, I think DC is in very deep sh*t, live-action comic movie-wise.

Why not make Superman:Man of Tomorrow film 1st release it 20015(Batman appears at the end). Make Dark Knight Over Metropolis release it 20016. Then make Justice League film release 2017.
It's a lot of work but the movies will be building up stream heading towards the Justice League film.So WB need to start getting their ducks in a row. So that they can have a Block Buster summer.

Here's one thing I didn't agree with in the whole idea of the dark knight rises an what I'm already not liking for this worlds finest movie. They are taking bits and pieces from possibly the creates graphic ever written. The dark Knight returns. Which by warner an DC doing that is killing any hopes of a movie adaption of dark Knight returns.
Deaft0ne writes:

They already made an animated ADAPTATION of The Dark Knight returns, and it was very good.

Snyder&Goyer said some elements of the comic are being used to tell the story but it's not a full adaptation. My guess is there are way too many characters in it and it wouldn't make sense to include all of them when the point of this movie is to lead into a JLA movie.
