First Look at Sean Penn in "The Gunman" Action Film, by "Taken" DirectorSubmit Comment
Back in January, it was revealed that French director Pierre Morel, who turned Liam Neeson into an action star in "Taken," was in talks with Sean Penn to star in his first action movie, called "The Gunman." And today, we have a first photo from the new film. Check it out below.

The story centers on an international operative named Martin Terrier (Penn) who is betrayed by the organization he works for and must go on the run in a relentless game of cat-and-mouse across Europe.

The script is written by Peter Travis and is based on a novel by Jean-Patrick Manchette. The film co-stars Javier Bardem, Idris Elba and Ray Winstone, and is currently shooting around Europe.

We're really scrounging around in the cracks at the bottom of the barrel when Hollywood decides to recycle Sean Penn into an action star.

I know at first glance this sounds done before. And to an extent you are right. But ill give this movie the benifet of the doubt.

In retrospect indiana jones was far from an original idea, the serial idea was around for 50 years. Lucas even openly admitted to stealing concepts and ideas to form the backbone of IJ and star wars.

both are thought to be classics and high water marks in theyre respective genres. Now im not saying this new movie will do the same to this genre, not at all. Just saying with the pedigree involved in front and behind the camera its possible.

I remember penn in casualties of war, man did a fantastic job. Certainly deserved more award consideration for that one. Then bardem and elba adding into it this could be special.

If the pedigree was not there id be skeptic as well, but as it looks/stands this could end up as a suprise treat.

Turning these old grizzly into action stars has worked out well so far. Liam, Deniro, Tommy Lee Jones (The Hunted), and Denzel have all made pretty decent action films past 60. Sean Penn has the demeanor and the fitness to play a convincing aging action star, so I'll definitely give this a chance. It's nice to have action star who are also excellent actors too for a change.

Hell they're even trying to turn El Duderino into an action star.

Penn's face looks more and more like a prosthetic mask everytime I see it. When's this douche going to abandon acting for puppetry like he promised.
