FilmDistrict has unveiled the first official poster for the upcoming "Oldboy" remake, giving us a look at Josh Brolin being set free. Check out the poster below and come back on Wednesday to watch the trailer.

Plot: An advertising executive (Brolin) is kidnapped and held hostage for 20 years in solitary confinement. When he is inexplicably released, he embarks on an obsessive mission to discover who orchestrated his punishment, only to find he is still trapped in a web of conspiracy and torment.

The new movie is directed by big-time *asshole Spike Lee and co-stars Elizabeth Olsen, Samuel L. Jackson and Sharlto Copley. It's set to hit theaters on October 25th.

Wow.

I'm sorry, but that's one very lazy poster, even when considering the poster's (limited) metaphorical iconography.

That trunk is filled with Diane Lane's used panties. Why leave, Josh? Why leave?

The same dude gets out the suitcase in the Chan Wook-Park version. It is a striking image for a poster.

@Deaft0ne: So what you're saying is the poster here is a rip of the original? And that's not lazy?

And the original has the guy wielding a hammer with murder in his eyes, so you know it's about some kind of revenge. This, this looks like he just came off the Titanic in Rose's steamer trunk.

Really, Spike Lee's version looks like a sequel to Around the World in 80 Days.

Now THIS is a good Oldboy poster

Maybe it's a sequel to The Matrix.

rooney mara was
supposed to play his ''friend''
but after dragon tattoo
didn't wanna play another extreme character

martha marcy may marlene star
Elizabeth Olsen was cast instead

Who else thinks the poster is too damned bright and colorful for a such a dark film? It's like they're afraid of alienating a larger, broader audience with the original disturbing source material, because for me, the poster looks like something made for a child's fantasy movie.

Even A Series of Unfortunate Events had a darker poster.

Not being negative, just honest.

Don't hate me because I'm beautiful.
Deaft0ne writes:

@mink

The original film is great in spite of the sick as f*ck incestous cous de tas.

I mean that using the image of Oh Dae-Su coming out of the suitcase in the original film is a striking image. Spike Pee is using it obviously. It is not in the comic.
Deaft0ne writes:

Incestuous cous de grais.
Stapes writes:

Nobody gives a sh*t about seeing this. Everyone who knows anything about film has already seen the original and there is nothing about this story, or that Spike Lee could do with it, that would make it mainstream acceptable. f*ck Alex, his stupid website with retarded unwanted popups and f*ck this stupid movie that noone really cares about.
Deaft0ne writes:

@stapes

Yeah the original is a great film and you really care for Oh Dae-Su. I doubt Brolin can forge a similar empathy.

Lee, like many filmmakers, are outdated products of a pre-internet world. Destined to be forgotten by all but the most ethnocentric film historians.

Deaft0ne writes:

@mink

I just wonder how this remake turned out because Oh Dae-Su is such a damaged character and Choi Min-Sik sold it beyond belief.

This remake will sit in the shadow of the original no matter how hard Spikey tries.

minkowski writes:

@Deaft0ne: I despise Spike Lee, no doubt, but all in all he's not a bad filmmaker. Unfortunately, every film of his I've ever seen is tinged with a racial subtext, so I wonder how he'll work that into this movie.

Regardless, you're right. There's no way he's going to exceed the original, or even approach matching it. More than likely we'll see a mainstream adaptation that hits all the notes of the original without either the properly violent inflection or the disturbing affectation.
cress writes:

I liked INSIDE MAN.
cress writes:
on July 9th, 2013 at 1:39:27 AM

I think Lee does have talent, and can be visually creative. The problem is he doesn't know how to listen to others in terms of editing his films, and there winds up being a lot of junk in his films-GIRL 6 comes to mind. His script choices have always been odd-SHE HATE ME was f*cking stupid. Plus, his need for self aggrandizing with roles for himself in almost all his films is annoying. INSIDE MAN and OLD BOY seem to be calculated choices to connect with a larger audience, and make him some mo' money.
minkowski writes:
on July 9th, 2013 at 1:51:03 AM

Inside Man and Oldboy are the films he makes to keep his name alive just enough so he can go make the kind of films he prefers to make, which are usually not the films the mainstream masses prefer to see. It's all a calculated effort to stay above water.
cress writes:
on July 9th, 2013 at 1:58:31 AM

That's true, but even those choices don't really scream mainstream box office hit. I think they're both different enough from typical Hollywood fare that it allows Lee to play in genres he's not known for, all the while maintaining his air of being offbeat, independent filmmaker. And a gigantic, f*cking, sh*tstain *sshole.
minkowski writes:
on July 9th, 2013 at 2:11:29 AM

No, no they're not Transformers or Paranormal Activity, but they're far more mainstream than She Hate Me and She Got Game, films that scream insularity right from the ebonics titling.

And let's be honest: Josh Brolin is pretty well known, and so is Clive Owens. Neither are obscurantist actors. Neither are really indie trippers either. So there's something I think to the notion Spike Lee wants to remain relevant to the average moviegoer while also, as you said, dip and dabble in more independent venues so he doesn't look like a commercial player, which would probably greatly offend his vision of himself as a bold, fresh African-American auteur.
minkowski writes:
on July 9th, 2013 at 2:13:51 AM

"And a gigantic, f*cking, sh*tstain *sshole."

lol. How this guy didn't go to jail for publishing Zimmerman's parent's home address and phone number in a clear attempt to get the dude hurt or killed, I have no idea, but to do so really sealed my impression of the man as a very hateful, vengeful little troll *sshole.

Never liked Oldboy as much as the rest of the cinema crowd (I preferred Sympathy for Mr Vengeance )
But I like the poster. It's not as good as the previous four, but it's a nice twist. Better use of imagery than the Korean one.
And I'm looking forward to Lee's take.

The other four posters were all miles better than this one.

He looks lost in this.
