Pixar Promises More Original Films and Less Sequels

Pixar Promises More Original Films and Less SequelsSubmit Comment
Pixar used to be a very unique movie studio. Each of its films were massive hits at the box office, but was also a favorite among movie-goers and movie critics for its original storylines.

After Disney became involved, Pixar starting focusing more on sequels, giving us "Toy Story 3," "Cars 2," "Monsters University," and "Finding Dory" (now in development). And while it's making millions in ticket sales and billions in merchandise sales, the studio has been listening to fans and has decided to alter its strategy, promising to create more original films.

"For artistic reasons it's really important that we do an original film a year," said Pixar President Ed Catmull. "Every once in a while, we get a film where we want or people want to see something continuing in that world - which is the rationale behind the sequel. They want those characters, which means we were successful with them. But if you keep doing that, then you aren't doing original films."

He continued: "We're going to have an original film every year, then every other year have a sequel to something. That's the rough idea."

Great, but did Pixar get Daddy Disney's permission to make such promises first, because I can tell you this much: Disney wants money first, second and third, and originality somewhere near the bottom, or else they wouldn't be talking about another Toy Story.

Simple put, Pixar doesn't have the budget or time to make more than one quality film a year, and with their production commitments to Disney, I just don't see this happening perhaps more than once a half-decade, unless Disney is willing to expand Pixar significantly.

Sounds like bullsh*t, i'll believe it when I see it.

The only Pixar sequel I want to see is "Incredibles 2", which, by the way, was the last good Pixar movie. I canīt stand most of their latest output, and I used to love their work. But Disney f*cked them up good with stupid sequels to some of their sh*ttiest movies like "Cars" and other sh*t like "Brave".

This is good news, that Pixar will start making more original films, but you pieces of sh*t still have nothing to say but negative crap. f*ck all of you losers.

+1 to Cress. Hey Chasef*ckface, I think the doctor needs to adjust your medicine.

I'll buy it. Disney may call the shots but at least a few of the top brass there are Pixar alum (Lassiter, anyone?). And come on, people, even Disney knows that they can't survive on sequels alone. At some point they've got to create new properties to completely flog to death. :)

Brad Bird is a talented director and he is now entertaining the idea of an Incredibles sequel after he does that 2500 movie about Walt Disney's first bloody sh*t or whatever the f*ck it is. JJ Abrams is handjobbing him as a producer or some sh*t.

Three out of their last four movies have been sequels or prequels (4-out-of-5 if you count the Cars spinoff Planes). Yeah, 1-out-of-2 is better than 3-out-of-4 but Pixar used to be better than Dreamworks in the beating-a-dead-animated-horse department. Now they're both guilty of whoring out their successful properties long past their expiry dates...

Thats good and all, but who actually wanted a Cars or a Monsters Inc. sequels?! Thats bullsh*t!!

And you can tell the second ones were for the money, no artistic vision like the originals. The originals had somethings to say, the sequels wanted money to make...one can tell by the Hollywood-by-number plots.

Maybe the only exception would be Toy Story, IMO.

@Dreamcast: Planes isn't done by Pixar, that's 100% Disney.

@CelluloidMan: Monsters U was actually incredibly enjoyable, from the easter eggs to the 1st movie, to the clever takes on popular college events.
