Seth Rogen Wanted for "Uncharted" Video Game Film

Seth Rogen Wanted for "Uncharted" Video Game FilmSubmit Comment
At one point, Mark Wahlberg and Robert De Niro were set to re-team with director David O Russell (The Fighter, Silver Linings Playbook) for a big screen adaptation of the "Uncharted" video game franchise.

After it became clear that Russell never played the game, the director ended up dropping out. Soon, director Neil Burger (Limitless) was brought on to helm from a script by "National Treasure" writers Marianne and Cormac Wibberley. But that also didn't work out.

And now comes word that Naughty Dog, the creator of the video game, has been in talks with "This is the End" co-directors Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg to write the script for "Uncharted" and possibly direct the film.

“They're constantly asking me and Evan to make the 'Uncharted' movie," said Rogen. Goldberg added that they've been offered the job multiple times over the last four years. While Rogen and Goldberg are fans of the game, they haven't been able to put together an original story. "It's just going to be Indiana Jones," said Goldberg. "If we can figure out a way to make it not Indiana Jones, it'd be awesome."

@pornfly

Michel Gondry, director of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Be Kind Rewind and other films directed The Green Hornet, not Seth Rogen.

Rogen & Goldberg wrote it though and for all of Rogen's mugging for the camera, Jay Chou actually stole the movie as Kato.

An Uncharted movie should be directed by a Stephen Sommers or a Jonathan Liebsman or a Rob Cohen or someone and cast Nathan Fillion as Nathan Drake. Give the poor guy a franchise already!

In all fairness, what they're saying is surprisingly intelligent. What passes in the gaming world seldom passes in movies, at least not for the same reasons.

Any Uncharted movie that simply does what the game does would, on screen, simply come off as a poor-man's Indiana Jones, no matter how big the budget. It might even come off as a poor-man's The Mummy or The Mummy Returns, both of which, in and of themselves, were already a poor-man's Indiana Jones. They weren't terrible movies, and neither was the two Tomb Raider movies (of which Cradle of Life is actually the better) but they all end up playing second fiddle to something like Raiders of the Lost Ark.

@Cannon

Crystal Skull was a pile of sh*t though and having played through all 3 Uncharted games, they could all be directly adapted as a film trilogy because the games themselves have very engaging and entertaining plotlines.

If they try to come up with some 'original' story then it will most likely suck.

@Cannon

I know that you mean an Uncharted movie would be compared to Raiders and Last Crusade which are the best Indy movies, but even Spielberg&Lucas were unable to come up with a decent 4th film and they created the franchise.

A truly talented writer&director will be able to make a good Uncharted film and I hope that's the case and it is not just farmed out to a couple hacks to make it.

Shane Black is making his Doc Savage movie as his next project and i'm sure he knows that comparisons to Indiana Jones are inevitable but I think he can make a good film.

Uncharted has the same potential as long as they respect the source material.

I wonder if Rogen's gut is playing the interactive treasure map...

Is Uncharted all about scruffy Jews who smoke pot and make d*ck jokes and then laugh at their own jokes? Because if so...he'd be perfect.

I agree with Cannon on this one. If they just adapt the game as is, people are going to complain it's an Indiana Jones rip-off. As a video game, Uncharted is awesome. As a movie, it's going to look derivative.

I actually give them credit for at least supposedly caring about what they would put up on screen and wanting to make it stand out on it's own merits.
