Mary Jane Watson Completely Cut from "The Amazing Spider-Man 2"

Mary Jane Watson Completely Cut from "The Amazing Spider-Man 2"Submit Comment
Several months ago, we saw photos from the set of "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," showing Shailene Woodley (The Descendants) as Mary Jane Watson. But now comes word that the actress and her character have been cut from the movie.

"I made a creative decision to streamline the story and focus on Peter and Gwen and their relationship," said director Marc Webb. "Shailene is an incredibly talented actress and while we only shot a few scenes with Mary Jane, we all loved working with her."

Webb added that he would still like to use Mary Jane Watson, but not until "The Amazing Spider-Man 3," which is set to hit theaters on June 10th, 2016.

Woodley commented on the decision, stating: "Of course I'm bummed. But based on the proposed plot, I completely understand holding off on introducing [Mary Jane] until the next film."

Unfortunately, Woodley won't be brought back as Mary Jane Watson due to the actress' busy schedule. There's already a plan to find her replacement.

Agree with @Cress with this one. She must've been not working out.

It would be nice if Sony would make a creative decision and completely cut out Marc Webb.

If they cut out Webb that would mean Sony was getting smart. That is inconceivable! LOL

This lack of organization and the number of villains reminds me of what was wrong with Spider-man III.

"She must've been underwhelming in the dailies"

No, Cress, and had you read Webb's reasoning, it's clear he removed her few scenes because he felt they didn't add to the story.

Isn't it fun when you listen to what other people have to say instead of the little voices in your head?

ANYway, looks like another sh*tty Spiderman film, especially if they're cutting scenes before even hitting the editing room.
Avirex writes:

When asked to elaborate Webb commented "The little bitch wouldn't swallow so she had to go".

Which was the same thing Michael Bay said when he fired Megan Fox.

There is the official report and then reading between the lines. She ain't that good. You don't cut out a secondary character relevant to the mythos like that AFTER filming footage unless it was so bad they can't work with it. Even Sony wouldn't waste money that kind of money as I assume she also got paid a nice little amount for this film also.

f*ck her and f*ck who's ever involved in this sh*tty franchise.

"Busy schedule"? That doesn't really make a whole lot of sense.
You'd have to assume that she would sign on for more then one film and would need to make commitments to the series if she was to play such a big character. Would have they recast her in Spidey 3 if she didn't get her scenes cut in Spidey 2? Probably not. I'm sure something else is going on. She was probably just miscast like Eric Stoltz in BTTF.

"You don't cut out a secondary character relevant to the mythos like that AFTER filming footage unless it was so bad they can't work with it"

You, much like Cress, seemed to fail at the reading comprehension part when and where Webb said "and while we only shot a few scenes with Mary Jane, we all loved working with her."

What about "only shot a few scenes" do you and the wunderkind Cress not understand? Mary Jane was never integral to the movie, more like an introduction to the character which would appear in Webb's Spiderman 3. What about "too many characters" do you not understand? You bitched when Raimi's Spiderman 3 had thirty characters, and you bitch because the new X-Men movie has too many on the roll-call, and yet when Webb decides to trim the fat, he drum up all kinds of unsupported theories instead of taking the man at his very clear and direct words.

There's reading between the lines, also known as subtext, and then there's just making sh*t up without a shred of proof, which is what Alex does. And that's who you and the Bad Joke Machine sound like. Alex.

In any case, I only know what Webb said, and there doesn't seem to be any subtext to his words, unless I'm supposed to ignore where he said the cast and crew loved her.

Whatever. I think some of you would see conspiracy in a ham sandwich. That or you just like being negative and having someone to hate on, which is supposed to be my job.

You can always assume, WV, or you can do the intelligent thing: wait for the facts. I mean, you know what they say, right? When you make an assumption, you make an ass out of you and umption.

Also, BIG clue, young Sherlocks of WP:

"Webb added that he would still like to use Mary Jane Watson, but not until "The Amazing Spider-Man 3," which is set to hit theaters on June 10th, 2016."

Yes, see, unlike Stoltz and Back to the Future, they haven't,and will not, recast the character. Instead Webb says he wants to use the character in a later movie.

If it was just a matter of Woodley sucking, then they'd likely recast, right?

And then ANOTHER BIG clue, master detectives:

"Woodley commented on the decision, stating: "Of course I'm bummed. But based on the proposed plot, I completely understand holding off on introducing [Mary Jane] until the next film."

Boom! Even Woodley says the reason was that they didn't want Mary Jane in the film at this juncture.

Bunch of goddamned geniuses, the lot of you.
minkowski writes:
on June 20th, 2013 at 2:32:05 AM

What this DOES sound like is the morons doing the production have no f*cking clue how to properly handle the sequel now that they can no longer unabashedly rape Raimi over a barrel.

It sounds like they have a half-assed script on their hands and a director who doesn't know his d*ck from his *sshole.
pornfly writes:

"FOllowing the trend of comic book movies "attempt" at keeping their stories "fresh""

Wrong, young padewan! It's not about "keeping the stories fresh". That's a f*cking euphemism they use so you don't see what their other hand is doing, and what it's doing is pandering to blacks, women, Jews, gays, the homeless, whoever they can reach outside the white male demographic, while also hitting their left-wing religious bullet points, number one of which is "diversity".

As they said in the Terminator 2 trailer: look again!

Woodley is out...the writing is on the wall.

If they really wanted to wait for her in Spiderman 3, they still could've used her in setting it up for part 3 or even just a cameo. Like a "Guess what's gonna happen in part 3...eh? eh? eh?" But I guess Sony just likes to pay people without getting anything in return...for an actress that was gonna be "join" the franchise anyway...please.

All this "oh, we're not using you" bullsh*t is just PR...
WV-Films writes:

Sounds like a bold move, especially after having filmed some scenes with her. Hopefully it benefits the film; we've all seen superhero movies that try to cram too many characters into one installment (Spiderman 3, anyone?). Kudos to Sony and Mr. Webb on making what mujst have been a difficult creative decision!
FrancoUnAmerican writes:

Although I am not digging all of these The Amazing Spider-Man 2 previews, that's a good move on Webb's part since having both Gwen Stacy and Mary Jane Watson on Spider-Man 3 f*cking suck because Sam Raimi f*cking lost it after the second one... I liked the first Amazing Spider-Man but they f*ck it up on the first sequel, damn, hand Spider-Man back to Marvel Studios.
FBO writes:

So wait, they loved her on set and this is about story and not talent but she's already booked for another movie instead of TASM 3? I call horse sh*t.
